It's my understanding that either of these (helmet photo below.... I added a "staff" for reference) is correct positioning, but still violates the "no athletic uniforms" portion of the flag code. This would be the same if you put a flag on the back bumper/window of your car. Field of stars towards the outside ege on the back of the vehicle (although on a vehicle the flag should always be flown on the right front and hung from a staff, so, a flag sticker on the rear bumper is still a flag code violation, but at least you'd have the proper orientation. )

On a military/LE uniform... this is correct for a flag patch on a sleeve. Field of stars always to the front.

Right sleeve.... Field of stars forward.

Wearing a flag on the front of a shirt gets a bit more confusing.... I think of it this way...
Draw a vertical line down the center of your chest. The field of stars should always be oriented closest to this line.
If I'm wearing a flag patch on my left side chest, this is correct.

Think of the centerline of your chest as if it was the bow of a boat cutting through the water. If you anchor a flag on the left side the stripes should trail the stars as the wearer moves forward. Field of stars closest to the bow, stars trailing. If you do the same thing on the right side, the field of stars must be reversed, or the stripes would be out ahead of the stars on your starboard side.

This is incorrect...

If you're wearing the flag ON your centerline, you're on your own... I don't have any advice for you...

Apologies to the OP for the off topic tangent... Maybe a nice Mod will split this into a separate thread..

ETA....

Imagine the bow of a ship splitting these two flags that are painted on either side of the bow.
The orientation on YOUR left (as you view the screen) would go over your right pocket (on your shirt). The other over your left pocket.
