If you know somebody that’s acting with a lot of hatred towards a particular group especially if you know somebody who’s a gun enthusiast or they’re armed with this type of fire arms and they’re showing any type of propensity for hatred, doesn’t mean that we’re going to go and take them to jail, but we might want to vet these people. He may well be alive today had we had the opportunity to do that.”

I live in Austin and I can tell you that Acevedo is an anti 2nd Amendment Socialist. He is active with several anti gun groups including Bloomburg and has traveled to Washington on taxpayer dollars to speak before Congress as a proponent of stricter gun control.
His statement was part of an interview but not taken out of context at all.
I no longer live within the city limits (hallelujah!) but I've lived in or near Austin for 24 years. I can assure you Art Acevado is not a friend of gun owners and his department is not one that has ever favorably impressed me. And I'm no expert, but my degree is in journalism and criminal justice and I've worked on some level with a handful of central Texas police departments (interacting as a college student, a journalist or a private citizen; no law enforcement training). They've all got their issues, but APD is something else.

However I just wanted to see the full interview/statement before I start jumping to conclusions.

It would have been good if a journalist had asked: what do you mean by "vet these people?"

Hey though didn't one of them hit the BG from 50 yards while holding the reins of his horse or something. That just screams Texan Justice.
I like the local reporter when I first heard it that morning. "someone shot up several buildings overnight. Fortunately police were able to quickly catch up with him and
shoot him." (her emphasis) You won't hear that kind of reporting in NYC.

None that I'm aware. Although if you were to lodge a non-anonymous complaint, that's probably enough for probable cause in some circumstances.
I'm not alarmed enough to call him a socialist. And the context here is that some nutty lone wolf just shot up downtown Austin. I am not a fan of the way the chief has run off gun shows in the Austin area, one of those things incidents was really constitutionally "iffy" in my opinion. I think he's trying to block bad guys from buying guns via private party which is really hard to do...
Basically he's saying that if you know someone who has lots of guns and has some pretty strong hatred you might want to be concerned. I think that's valid.... If I had a neighbor that was a little nutty, was really hateful, and was packing all kinds of guns, I'd be concerned.
This is another case of someone who never should have had a gun getting one... How do we address that proactively before someone rams legislation down all our throats and we end up like New Jersey?
I actually like APD better than some of other local alternatives. I've seen at least one officer behave really badly, but in my experience that was a single exception...
The news says that the APD officer that took the bad guy down was 100 yards away (300 feet) holding two horses... You certainly can't complain about that APD officer's ability to shoot. The bad guy had a bunch of other targets on his list.

This all boils down to how the progressives (socialists!) define hate. If they are true to form they will do the same as they have done to the word racism and racist. I have an extreme disgust for many in the government. I am quite certain if a prog heard one of my rants I would be "vetted".

I am still "covered" from the home supply while the legal process on the 1 or 2 works its way through the system.
