I'm so glad I live in the country.

ALL my neighbors are gun folk.

No one complains when I practice shooting in my back yard.

What do I practice with?

.22/38special/357 magnum/9mm (mostly) 12 gauge shotgun/ and various .223/5.56 and well you get the picture.

And every single one of my neighbors WILL protect themselves from criminals. And they practice a lot too. It's music to my ears to hear it.

No cowering in the bedroom hoping the bad guys will just go away for this bunch...

That HOA is stepping dangerously into an area that will get them sued...

Wouldn't be too quick to do that:
1) The board is typically indemnified. The neighborhood pays for the typical insurance.
2) Sue the HOA and win, who pays? You do! And your neighbors, of course...

The only way I ever found to stop the madness was become part of it... And then quietly move into the country.

I was thinking that exact same thing. It is not their opinion is wrong or right, it is that they shouldn't have on to begin with.

Very fortunate with our HOA was the president is former military (and carries), the secretary is in LE and the VP works for firm who does some 2A representation. At least two neighbors in each direction at least carry or keep SD weapons in their home or are LEOs.

The best way to deal with an HOA is to comiserate with the folks that live under their thumb, and be glad that you could afford to live somewhere that an HOA will never be a problem!

Not all of us want to live in the sticks however. If you live in the suburbs in Texas, you live with an HOA.

Not always true. I live in a nice but older neighborhood in Carrollton. No HOA here and I'm glad.
HOA's can have tremendous power in Texas, e.g., the power to foreclose on your home.

They have some benefits, however from some folks I've spoken to, the bad outweighs the good by a fairly large margin.
The ROI is just not there.

I agree with LabRat.

HOA's were considered "assets" when I was buying in 1992. I refused to look at any home that required HOA membership because I see the HOA as delegating authority away from the homeowner. I found a custom home in a great neighborhood with a voluntary neighborhood association. Our community has thrived while a nearby "exclusive" neighborhood with an HOA has not done well at all.

Not true, my friend. I've lived in several different cities in the last 3 decades, all in Texas and none, except the present homestead, would even be remotely consider "the sticks".

True, they were not in the latest neighborhoods with all of the cookie-cutter homes with negligible yards that seem to be popular for new housing developments, today - they were all neighborhoods that had been established before the developers found out that HOA's could be profit centers.

And I thought the only "I hate all HOA's" discussions were on eHam.

If you don't want the benefits and responsibilities of living in an HOA neighborhood, then don't. (I'm not talking about/to CedarParkDad.) I wouldn't even consider living outside an HOA again, but that's my choice. HOAs cannot regulate firearms or their usage, so guns are not a problem. If a loon on the Board gives bad advice, ignore it.

Yup.

Our HOA is voluntary, and they certainly have done a ton for neighborhood. Negotiated gas leases for all of us, and managed to talk to lessee into making a sizable donation to the HOA. 4th of July parades, crime patrol, Easter Egg Hunts, etc. etc. Unfortunately their ranks have been infiltrated by a few folks that are just a little bit different.

Maybe what you should do is send him a response letting him know that all future such emails will publicly posted, along with the name of the HOA (and the area it's located), just so "folks" can stay "informed". Maybe that'll get his attention.

Our previous neighborhood in north Austin (yes, inside city limits) technically had an HOA, but it was an HOA formed solely for the purpose of preventing an actual HOA from ever being formed.
