If you have shot a .40 before and are okay with it then that would be a fine round. I also know a retired LEO that carried a Glock .357SIG for most or all of his carrier and liked that round very well. My non-expert recommendation would be to go with .45ACP first and then .357SIG.

Whatever caliber you choose, you wont go wrong. In my opinion 22lr, 380, 9, 40, 45, 357sig and mag, etc. are all great rounds. The only calibers I dont like are the very uncommon and useless calibers like 45 gap or 50gi. That being said, I have a FN Five Seven that shoots a not so common round. At least it has a purpose though, it makes me happy.

***update***
After reading through the comments I decded to go for a 45 next. I happened to check our local gun trader website late in the afternoon and to my surprise found a freshly listed G21SF. The owner was motivated to sell and we settled on 500. I got a heck of a deal! The gun and accessories look brand new. It came with truglo night sights, extended mag and slide release, ghost connector, competition trigger spring, and back plate with etched Texas flag. I am stoked! Picked up a few boxes of ammo at Walmart on way home and ready for the range this weekend.

My thanks for everyone's feedback!

Excellent choice. I have a Glock 21SF and that is the pistol that I trust will help keep my family safe at home. Again, excellent choice.
