I have came to two different officers help since my other life and I would do it again.

All I COULD HAVE done was assist the injured officer. I'm in no physical shape to get involved in a brawl, especially considering the city would have said "thank you" and patted me on the back while the postal service was bringing the hospital and doctor's bills. They wouldn't be taking care of my missing paycheck, either.
Life and death situation? Yeah, my trigger finger works, but other than an observing role or a non-physical medical assist (i.e. I'm not rapelling down a crater to help an injured officer), that's about all anyone should expect. 40 years ago, woulda been a different story.

Assisting? As I watched this, I thought about that. It would be a hard one to help out with. Almost from the outset, there were several police officers. I don't know how much I could have done that would help, that would not endanger me from a tragic misunderstanding.
The first time I saw the video, I had not read the story. I kept wondering why the two "civilians" involved were fighting each other. I'm sure a backup cop arriving on the scene would have the same problem. Even after reading the story, it took a long time into the video to figure out which of the two was the security guard and which was the family member (the shorter guy finally goes over and starts pounding a cop, so that made it pretty obvious).
Pulling a gun in the middle of the confusion could very easily get you shot by the police.
I think the extent of my help would have been what the two guys did near the end, help the injured cop to get out of the middle of it.
I wouldn't have made a very good cop in this situation either. I think there'd have been a lot more dead or injured family members.

What's the story with this family?
Romany folk?
Down and out crime family?
Since the police were surprised by their tactics, such as rolling to break the taser wires, face grabbing, extraordinary resistance to pain... Where did they get their training?
The police were not able to stop them or even slow them down with hard punches, kicks, asps application, tasers, and even breaking the arm of one of them. The guy with the broken arm kept up a high level of fighting. Broken arm, no problem...
Who are these people?
I'm interested in their background.
Your average petty criminal isn't this tough. Yeah, some are, but most comply with a dose of "act right" pepper spray or being tazed or repeatedly hit with an asp or soundly punched/kicked and the rest of what the police did to get them under arrest.
Perhaps, ex-spetsnaz? Yeah, I kid, but not by much... Do they have super powers or does it just seem that way?
And the mother, standing with her 11 year old daughter in the middle of the fray, presumably to help interfere with the police. What on earth? That passive action too indicates a level of training.
Is it too far out there to suggest they're testing terrorist waters in fighting the police? Yeah, I know, that sounds kinda nutty, but these are not your standard issue petty criminals.
They're trained, willing to fight and accept a supremely high level of pain and keep fighting.
Who are these people?

According to this news article, they moved from Boise, ID a month ago for some unknown reason:
"Police: Family in Walmart melee were street performers"

Their band is called Matthew 24 Now

Thanks joe817,
A family cult?
Or, even a doomsday family cult hoping to all go to heaven per suicide by cop?
The thing I'm still interested in is: Where did they get their training and what musical band could be so darned relentless and tough in fighting trained cops?
Something doesn't add up...

Romany folk = Gypsies
"Sounds more like a Sovereign Citizen flavor to me" - This too sounds equally possible.
But for certain, they aint yer everyday scumbags, they's something quite different...

One of the news stories I read said that they are a traveling Mormon Christian singing group. Matthew 24 now -

Am I the only one thinking trips to Walmart are just getting weird at this point?
As to the "would you help" Just the video is chaotic. I imagine Real Life (TM) was far worse. I don't see how I could have helped.
To the officers on the board, other than calling 911 what would you recommend for good citizens to do?

Dang... Some family.
I would jump in the middle of that to help the officers. I carry a collapsible baton in a backpack in my truck, mainly for breaking out windows if I happen to be the first to an accident and things need to happen fast.
I'd get out that baton and hit those crazy folks until I could no longer lift my arms.

AJSully421,
I hope you're in law enforcement?
If you live in the state of Texas, I do believe it's unlawful to carry (even in a vehicle) a collapsible baton, i.e. and "asp" if you're not an LEO.
Anyone here know for certain?
Thanks!
