I used mine to vote in the county election last Saturday and to pick up something at the post office. of course I had to be unarmed to show at both places.

Oh? Which ones? Any of the big chains? I don't buy much, but I'll take lower prices wherever I can get them.

Local ISD has the computer system that scans your DL and makes a pass for you to authorize to walk around the school..... after you get buzzed through the door.... I normally try and eat with my daughters during their lunch once a week and jsut after they installed it at my eldest school i inadvertently handed the administrator my CHL instead of DL and she scanned it in and still got a pass.... she looked at it afterwards and said " looks like a DL but its not"... other than that time i haven't used it as a form of ID
an argument that i guess that can be used is that its issued by the State Dept of Public Service (which a DL is also) so it must be a valid govt ID

I cannot use it in Texas (the local TSA folks know what to look for), but I do use it often in parts of the country where the 2nd Amendment does not apply (New Jersey, Chicago, the People's Republic of California). It is fun to see the look on their faces when they recognize it for what it is.

If the new law ultimately passes - will we still have to carry a DL as we currently do or will the new law recognize the CHL as a stand alone ID?

My understanding is that you could use CHL as stand alone government ID for what you would otherwise need your DL for. (a traffic stop would require driver license)

TVGuy,
Thanks, but I'm still not clear on whether I will be able to simply carry the CHL and not the DL, as in the instance where I'm out cycling.
Currently, I have to carry both a DL and the CHL. Presumably, the DL validates the CHL, which I think is absurd.
It'd be great if I don't have to carry my DL when in fact I'm not driving, but pedaling.

If you're carrying your gun, you still have to carry both and show both if asked for ID. It's more about being able to use CHL as an ID when making transactions, not including renting a car or at an airport security line.

TVGuy,
Thanks again for the clarification.
Having to carry both when carrying is, in my opinion, gilding the lily, but (sigh) if required to please the powers that be, I'll do it...grumble, cough, grumble, dumb requirement...

I handed my CHL to a bank teller (by mistake) when he asked for ID and he looked at it quizzically and then asked me for a drivers license. I wanted to use it to vote but completely forgot. Other than that and buying guns the only time it leaves my wallet is when I want to stare at it fondly
It's a good bill though and frankly it should have been law a while ago.

I have used my CHL at the V.A. Hospital , Walmart, Bank, and so on, They all agree it is better than a D.L. or ID Card.
My Bank has no problem with a CHL holders going through the Drive in Teller ....Just cant take it in lobby.
I used it to pay Property Taxes.

I use it when buying a gun. You don't want to use it that's fine.
