My phone is a business phone and I am required to carry it almost all the time. The few times I get to turn it off or not have it with me is like dropping off a ball and chain. As much as I need and use my phone I look forward to the opportunity to turn it off.

It seems like only a few years ago we were not expected to be in constant contact with our employers, spouses, kids, and so on. "Leave a message and I will get back to you" seems so foreign. So when I leave this job I am trashing the iphone and if I am ever in a shooting or emergency situation I will ask one of the dozen kids standing around recording it on their cell phone to call the cops for me.

When I was growing up, the cell phone had not yet been invented. I survived many years without it. Today, I could still do the same.

Abraham, you made me laugh. Hard. I saw the poll, voted in it (I don't leave without my phone), and then looked at the results. I saw that there was ONE respondent who voted "didn't see the need", and I thought to myself "I'll bet that was Abraham"!

Of course, I actually agree with you on one level. But I use my phone for a lot more than just making phone calls, and although I haven't don't an actual time study, I'd be willing to bet that I use it as a telephone only about half the time I'm using it...... including sometimes using it to post on this forum. It's a camera, a gps, a calendar, a ballistic calculator, a banking tool, a health monitor, and an Internet access point in the field for my laptop. And that's just off the top of my head.

That said, when I am blessed enough to retire to my future farm, I'll probably stop carrying it all the time.
