I read a very well written article somewhere recently about the perpetuated myth that the XD line of guns was somehow less reliable or more prone to failure then <insert fanboy brand here> - I believe the author compared them to Glocks since they are the internet's favorite golden boy (unfortunately I cannot remember where I found the article or I would link it). The author had done his own tests, contacted various organizations, etc - trying to find a higher then statistical anomaly that would support the claims. His conclusion was there was no evidence that he could find that supported that fact. Sure there are pictures and anecdotal evidence in forums and elsewhere- but they fall in the normal failure % that is expected - alot can even be contributed to improper loads or abuse/poor maintenance on the users fault. Using Glocks as the example, they have just as high a failure rate reported, but the bias has made it seem like the XD's are somehow more unreliable.
Now as far as my own personal experience, I own 2 XDs - an XD 40 SA - I've owned this gun now for for 9-10 years now and never had any problems and have fired at least 2000+ rounds through it. I also own a XDs 9mm - I've only had this a few months and only have a box or 2 of ammo through it. But so far, the only problems I've had is feeding issues. And come to find out that was due to me maxing out the clip. From what I read, this is a known issue with new clips having too much tension and causing feeding problems. Anyways thats my .02ยข

My son bought a XDM 9mm. He thinks it is the best pistol he has ever fired.
Never had ANY issues with it. Bought it in 2008.
Based on that, I bought an XDM in .45 back in 2009. Same opinion.
Have not had any issues with my XDM. Shoots when I pull the trigger and don't when I don't.
Sounds like some kind of bias.
OH and never had any feed problems with either.

Yeah, well Consumer Reports just published their yearly auto review and they claim that BMW has a better reliability rating than Corvette. So, if you have ever owned either one, you know why I am discontinuing my subscription to that rag!
I bought my first 2 handguns 4 years ago, a Glock 19 and a Springfield XD(m). Couldn't decide after trying them both which one I liked better - at that time.
Having said that, the Springfield rapidly became my "go to" training gun and now likely has had close to 10,000 rounds through it without a single issue. Guess I should clean it and order a new bbl?
I am more accurate with the Springfield, I think that it is due primarily to the grip angle ( a very individual issue obviously), as well bbl length and weight. It is a smoother shooting firearm IMHO (YMMV) and in fact I have had instructors try it and ask if it has had a trigger job - it has not, but it is certainly well broken in at this point!
Now, it is NOT a $3,500 Wilson Combat 1911, we know that and it never will be even close. But like others have stated, it has led me to purchase additional Springfields (in different calibers, bbl lengths, etc) and for the money, I am very pleased.
So I don't know where that report was published, but I am certain that there is no data to back it up.

There is no arguing with internet commandos.

-XDs XDMs of any kind
-HiPoint. All of them.
-Tapco
-Promag
-CAA
-Subcompact 1911s of any kind
-I.O. Inc. AK variants
-Century Arms RAS-47 AK variants.
-Palmetto State Armory AK variants.
Interesting, so my XDM and/or XDS is not a dependable fighting implement? I better send a notification to some police departments.
Beware all of a subcompact 1911! Better ditch your promag gear too!

While the list is ridiculous I will admit to experiencing enough problems with Promag magazines that I avoid them. That said, there is virtually no manufactured product, no matter how well crafted or expensive, that doesn't experience some percentage of unit failures.

A lot of good information guys. I wouldn't take the group that I got this info from too seriously but that's why I was looking for opinions here. They kind of have an attitude "my **** is better than yours". Some good things come out of there but not too much. I'm fairly new to Springfields and I bought a post recall XDs. No problems so far.

My wife's G19 has jammed once or twice in the years we've owned it. My XDM? Never. Not once. Not even during break-in. My compact XDM in .45 ACP shoots a bigger more powerful cartridge just as softly as my full sized G17 in the smaller less powerful 9mm. It has a match grade barrel. It has a better trigger. And.... my XDM45 Compact 3.8 two-tone was about the same price as my G17. It's not that the G17 is a bad gun, it is not. It is a very good gun, and I carry mine all the time. It is not that the G17 was overpriced, it wasn't. It's that the XDM45 Compact 3.8 is a great gun at a reasonable price.
People who act like that are close-minded ideologues......... which is another way of saying "idiots".
BTW, please PM me the url for that site. I am genuinely curious.
Still waiting for that "Like" button...
I own an XDm compact 9mm and an XDs .45 (bought used on this forum), never a lick of trouble from either one. The .45 has become my favorite carry weapon...

TAM would still have the most likes. Brough my .45 XD(S) new, and it's not had single issue, PERIOD. Best track record of any handgun I have bought or used to date.
