jallen, this discussion is only about private universities.
I generally support the fact that private universities, like private employers, have rights to their properties, just as we have our rights. The argument that private universities somehow receive govt funds, should make them not private, would apply to any private company, govt contractor, etc. who receives any govt money.
Full disclosure. I used to work for a private government contractor, and now I work for a private university. I'm not happy with all their policies, but I have to tolerate them to keep my job. Their property, their rules.
