Harvest Baptist Church

Thanks.
oljames3, there are no signs posted at the sanctuary entrances. But, they operate an accredited K-12 private school, Harvest Academy. I admit that I need to brush up since it's not a part of my routine. Does that keep us from carrying?
TPC 46 lists the prohibited places.

My Ft Worth contact talked with a rep and was told CC was OK but no OC. I assume this to mean the seminar will not be held in a building or part of a building of the school. I'm prepared for either carry mode and will adjust as necessary.

Perhaps his message has changed over the years, but Meeks spoke to our church volunteers several years ago - it took me a year to repair the damage done in his one day seminar (most of which was promoting sales of his materials and security services). YMMV, but I'll pass.

As I posted on the "meet-up" thread, if there really is a group interest in this, I would think that scenario training such as that provided by Robbie Allmon of P2 Concepts, or Mac Mackenzie of Critical Defense Group, while more expensive, would probably be more meaningful in terms of really learning how to deal with an active killer, and to practice strategies for "run, hide, fight" and trauma care. We could put together a really phenomenal 1 or 2 day training on the subject for the members of this forum if we choose to do so.

Is this seminar's focus on how to survive an active shooter, that is, protecting yourself and yours or how to protect society at large?
Or...?
Anyone know?
Thanks!

Seems to me it is geared to church safety since it is targeted at church leadership, pastors, elders, deacons and such. Those responsible for shepherding and protecting their flocks.

mojo84,
Thanks!
When I see the word "Sheepdog" ,I generally think of those who are willing to protect more than themselves and their family.

Yeah, I think there may be a better term used for such as this seminar. I sent an invite to my church's pastoral staff. Haven't heard back yet. I'm wondering if the sheepdog aspect may be turning them off some. I may also be over thinking it.

If I were to go to one of these seminars, it would be motivated less by a desire to protect my church, which has already organized armed first responders who are off-duty LEOs, but more from a desire to gain general knowledge about surviving active shooter events, wherever they occur.

My main interest in going is to hear LTC Grossman talk. I've read his book "On Combat" and my police chief recommended LTC Grossman's book "On Killing". I'd like to have signed copies.
This is from the web site on the topic of sheepdog:
IT HAS BEEN SAID THAT THERE ARE 3 KINDS OF PEOPLE IN THE WORLD...
...wolves, sheep, and sheepdogs. Most people are sheep - and there's nothing wrong with that. They love peace and quiet, and they are not likely to rise to the occasion should violence strike.
Another kind of person is a wolf. Wolves can be vicious. They will attack a person just because they want their wallet, or choose to rape their daughter. They are evil.
Fortunately, there is a third kind of person in the world: Sheepdogs. Sheepdogs love peace, too. However, they are aware that there is evil in the world. They know the wolves prowl about. They do not crave violence, and wish the world was free of its wars and riots. But they know that heaven with its glory has not yet arrived. And until it does, the sheepdog will take his/her stand against violent people (wolves).
When we refer to a "Sheepdog Seminar for Churches," we are appealing to churches to form Eyes and Ears Teams at their houses of worship: men and women (sheepdogs) who's assignment on that particular day is to watch out for anyone and anything that threatens the safety of the congregation.
Some of LTC Grossman's thoughts on sheep, wolves, and sheepdogs:
"The sheep generally do not like the sheepdog. He looks a lot like the wolf. He has fangs and the capacity for violence. The difference, though, is that the sheepdog must not, cannot and will not ever harm the sheep. Any sheep dog who intentionally harms the lowliest little lamb will be punished and removed..."
"The sheep would much rather have the sheepdog cash in his fangs, spray paint himself white, and go, 'Baa.' Until the wolf shows up. Then the entire flock tries desperately to hide behind one lonely sheepdog..."
" Still, the sheepdog disturbs the sheep. He is a constant reminder that there are wolves in the land..."
"...a sheepdog is a funny critter: He is always sniffing around out on the perimeter, checking the breeze, barking at things that go bump in the night...

Since I am heavily involved in our church's leadership, it's part of my responsibility to help make sure we are prepared. Hence my interest in this particular seminar.
I also am interested in my and my family surviving an active shooter situation but that should usually goes without saying.
From the seminar announcement.
WHO NEEDS TO ATTEND THIS SEMINAR?
Pastors, Church Staff, Church Secretaries, Youth Workers, Deacons, Ushers, Church Safety Teams, First Responders...School Administrators...Teachers...If you are concerned about the growing problem of violence at faith based locations (or anywhere else!) - this is for you...

It's been about 5 years since I've been to this seminar. I would like to go again.
My understanding is that there are vendors selling services who are part of the program. That helps pay for it - take it for what it is worth. When I went Meeks focus was on trying to make churches understand the dangers of doing nothing and to make them aware of dangers to religious institutions. He also focuses on sexual predators which he has stated is a greater risk than active shooter. His focus when I went was to try and wake up church leaders. Vendors were there to sell security services, child safety etc. It has gotten bigger so I'm sure there are more vendors.
At the one I went to, we got to hear from the lead homicide detective in the 1999 Wedgewood Baptist Church shooting here in Fort Worth. That alone was what made it worthwhile to me. I learned a lot of interesting things about that shooting.
I would like to go again to hear Grossman and Chinn. Grossman doesn't need introduction, but Carl Chinn is one of the foremost experts on church/ministry security and crime statistics. He wrote the book
Evil Invades Sanctuary. He was the first responder in 1996 at the Focus on the Family hostage situation and in 2007 a member of the security team at the New Life Church shooting in Colorado Springs in 2007. HIs book and church crime stats can be found here:
http://www.carlchinn.com/. I highly recommend his book. I bought two for the rest of our security team to be able to read.
