This is really dumb. I would be really mad if I had to evacuate my house for something so stupid.

The problems I have with this is..... The trained "Bomb Squad" tech KNOWS this is a lie, that's not a guess, if the "Bomb Squad" has anyone on the team actually trained as a explosives Tech, they can not possibly believe that ammunition was "definitely a big danger" Oh and this was the second time they had been at that house according to the article, earlier for some shotgun shells.

This smells as a department head justifying thier budget yesterday and next year
Yep.

All dressed up and no place to go!

Same reason SWAT gets rolled out on things that could better be handled by just one person knocking on a door.

We definitely need and appreciate both group of guys, but you have to wonder about their leadership sometimes.

I don't live in SA, but from what I've read and heard, the city leaders are very anti 2A. They also like to pass their own knife laws, more restrictive than state laws, etc.. This may just be a case of fear mongering trying to show the uninformed populace that having guns and ammo in your home is dangerous. "We have to evacuate whole city blocks if you find a box of ammo." Helping to justify their stance on gun ownership.

If they had to evacuate several houses over 75 rounds, I'd hate to see the reaction if they came by my house. We might be talking about a state wide evacuation.

I listened to the video at the link, sounds like the reporter is saying "thirty caliber" not forty -- which of course does not make this any less nuts.

When I bought my house in Austin many years ago, I found up in the attic 96 rounds of Korean war vintage 30 cal complete in en block clips to fit my Garand. I considered it a nice bonus and did not feel the need to evacuate the area. Times have changed.

Absolutely. The folks in the trenches are usually just as baffled.
Edited. As baffled as us.

I'm sure that most folks on this forum know what happens when a charge ignites outside of the barrel.

There is nothing (no barrel) to contain the gas generation from the burning powder and create the pressure rise in order to propel the bullet, so the case just becoming a teeny-tiny pipe bomb. IOW, like a black cat made of brass rather than paper. With no pressure to propel the bullet it pretty much just pops out of the case and falls to the ground. Someone needs to send this video to the San Antonio FD and bomb squad.

BREAKING NEWS: INTERSECTION OF I10 AND I410 NE CLOSED IN ALL DIRECTIONS

Bexar County Sheriff's Deputies and the San Antonio Police Department this morning were forced to close all north- and south-bound lanes of Interstate 410 NE and all west- and east-bound lanes of Interstate 10 where the two freeways intersect. Both frontage roads of Interstate 10 east of South WW White Road and leading to the NE interstate 410 Loop were also closed. Occurring near the end of rush hour, the closures caused massive traffic jams as San Antonians have few alternatives to bypass the area.

Based on anonymous reports to the San Antonio Police Department, a combined law enforcement effort executed an early raid on a business operating at 4818 Interstate 10 East that contained not only a huge arsenal of firearms--even including machine guns and assault rifles--but also caches of ammunition numbering into the tens of thousands of bullets.

"This is obviously a startling threat to public safety," said SAPD Sergeant Homer S. Doh. "I've been a police officer for almost 25 years, and I have never encountered such an incredible stash of guns and bullets."

Due to the inherent and immediate danger to the millions of vehicles that use that freeway intersection every week, law enforcement officials quickly closed all lanes in the area while the SAPD Bomb Disposal and other specialty units were dispatched to clear the building, remove the enormous collection of munitions.

Sergeant Doh said that the business called itself the Nardis Gun Club, but he had no other information to share at this time.

KSAT is awaiting a press conference by San Antonio Mayor Ivy Taylor and will bring that you live as it happens.

 Sigh... I could have walked over and disposed of it. Here is what happened when you drop, shot or burn ammunition.

That's okay. You only need to worry if you have 75 or more.
