Filed down the firing pins? If they are going to take out the pin to file it down, why not just leave it out and not file it down? Seems like they would have to replace a perfectly good firing pin if they filed one down.

Hammer fired, I am sure that they just pulled them. Strikers were likely the ones that were filed down. A Glock or M&P striker could be dremeled in about 10 seconds, and replaced with a new on just as quickly.

It is my understanding that these are destined to be long-term display pistols, and maybe range rentals after that... so they don't really care.

There's a facility here in Houston that does the same thing. Firing pins removed or disabled. Pistols and long guns displayed, available, and cabled.

I like it. I can move about freely, not wait on a counter-type to get around to maybe showing me what I want to see, especially if I'm just kicking tires.

And best of all, I've never had a counter employee point a gun at me, do something stupid with the "check clear" process (or fail to show me a clear gun) -- hence no "lessons" to be taught (I don't have any patience for poor handling skills, especially from gun store personnel.)

Done properly, this type of display will revolutionize gun store showrooms IMO.

It *does* take some getting used to though...

Every gun show I've been to had the same set up. And the crowds are a LOT worse there than at a gun shop. One benefit is that you can fondle which gun you like without the salesman being right there breathing down your neck.

I'm pretty confident I have been to that store. And yes the guns are not able to become live or hot even if someone did put a loaded magazine or ammo in them, per salespeople. I agree with Joe, that's a great way for you to handle them without having a salesperson. All the gun stores should do that IMO.

Sounds like they are doing the same thing as what is done at the NRA convention and SHOT Show every year where there are thousands of guns on display and thousands of people handling them. Never heard of a mishap with a display gun at either.

Would you want to buy a firearm from a store where SOME of their inventory has had the firing pin removed? Would you be confident the piece you buy is in original condition?

Yes - assuming I trust the store/employees. The same question can be posed of any gunstore that has guns on display. You have to hope/trust that if they are selling you a display model it is marked or noted as such.

You should have shot your gun imo, hundreds of times before you trust your life with it. After those several hundred rounds you ought to know whether or not the firing pin is there and operating. Light disassembly in the parking lot could also tell you whether the gun is functioning. I think this method is great!

Heck - why wait till the parking lot. Any good gun store worth its salt should allow you to do that in the store before you complete the purchase I would think.

Totally agree. Field strip the gun in the store prior to purchase to help you resolve any issues you may have.
