I have had both a RIA and Springfield that were around that price range, granted this was a few years ago and it was wholesale prices. Both of them were extremely reliable so I'm sure you could pick one up used if you took your time.

I did - two of 'em. A springfield armory GI champion for $500 and a springfield armory GI micro for $300. both shoot very well. carry them all the time. took me a while to get used to the 3" barrel on the micro.
I've never been and hope i never am in a gun fight so maybe our definition of reliable is different?

Going to go out on a limb here and say it isn't the platform. You have had three different manufacturers and had problems with all three. I think something else is going on.

Well, my mistake. Apparently you can purchase a 1911 without bankrupting yourself. A friend of a friend bought three RIA 1911s before his last deployment(2 for him and one for his wife), he reports that he loves them.

If you can't afford the gun, how can you afford to shoot it.
I guess that depends on how much you shoot it. I got a Ruger SR1911 the first year they made them. It appears the price has gone down some since then. I think mine is worth more because it's a Ruger first, made on the 100th anniversary of the 1911, and it's my first 1911.
Also made in the USA, and I know Ruger has some of the best customer service out there.
