Where I grew up the mail ran fine. We got our mail in our box (rural route) between 10:00 and 10:15 AM. You could mail stuff to the wrong town (next closest) town and we would still get it. Not because the USPS is amazing, but because the people working at the stations were. I've repeatedly had mail disappear here in Dallas. Why, not because the USPS is horrible, but because the people working the stations up here are.

I try to only use UPS if I can. FedEx will only deliver to the apartment office, and better hope you check your tracking number regularly because their automated system to send you notifications doesn't work (at least not for me). Still at least stuff gets delivered and not just poof vanish and claim it was delivered correctly.

We have great mail service, with an outstanding (lady) carrier. The mail is almost always in the box before 10 am. She puts anything too big for the box on the front porch and rings the bell.

FedEx also puts packages on the porch and rings the bell.

UPS puts packages on the porch and may, or may not, ring the bell. Invariably though, he puts it nearly against the storm door. We open the wooden door and can see the box. If it's too heavy to slide with the door, we have to go out through the garage and walk around to the front porch. It's as though he leaves his brain in the truck.

i've actually spoken to the manager of our local usps office and he flat out said that they can't keep delivery drivers because the routes are too large and difficult so they all as for easier routes. which means the new people all get on our large route, so half the time we either wont get mail or its the wrong mail. I told this to an older retired gentleman i met who used to work for the post office and he said the drivers in his day weren't allowed to quit a route and ask for one easier they got what they got and that was that.

Added to my previous rant:

Just came back from Wally World. Ordered 4 GRAY pocket tee shirts on line, as store had none. Order arrived (and they never notified me of that anyway) and when I opened the package, they were BLUE! It's not the businesses folks, it's what society has become. A nation of workers who couldn't care less. Just give me my pay and bennies!

It's not the USPO at fault, it is us as a society. We have become so accustomed to shoddy work, or service, that it has become the norm. I run across it every day wherever I shop, and every time I need service. It's daily!

For example: Wednesday. Wife wanted a small cheeseburger and fries from McDonalds. Told me to make sure they put more than one pickle slice on it. I told them at the ordering mic, I told them at the window I paid for it, and sure enough when they handed me the bag, it had ONE pickle slice. Thursday, ordered two personal pan pizzas from Pizza Hut. Went to pick it up at the scheduled pick up time. Young lady at the counter said it will be a few minutes more. I waited. After about 5 minutes another worker asked if I had been helped. I said yes, but I saw two personal pan pizza boxes sitting in the warming area. I asked him to check to see if they were mine. They were! They were ready when I got there, but nobody bothered to check. And these are the people that believe they deserve $15/hr minimum wage.

I remodeled two bathrooms last month. We used fiberglass tub and shower surrounds. It took many trips to Home Depot returning the cracked items, due to poor packing/shipping. The toilet for the front bathroom, already has a problem, but I sure am not un-installing it to return it. The 40v hedge trimmer I bought last month at Lowe's already has a battery issue after 2 uses. The foot massage bath I got for my wife last month has been returned because it did nothing but sit there - not working. I could go on and on, and you folks probably can too.

These are small inconveniences/examples, I realize, but they illustrate the daily frustration with businesses as a whole. They are not gov't run businesses, and they perform shoddy service, yet they thrive. Why, because we accept it. The whole point is that WE, as consumers, have allowed this to happen, and it will only get worse, as the work ethic in this country doesn't exist anymore.
I understand your frustrations, and I too have had more than my fair share of issues with items/services purchased in the private sector. However, I don't "just put up with it" I complain, I write company executives, I contact the BBB. Does it always result in satisfaction? No, but at least with the private sector, with very few exceptions, I have alternatives, and I take my consumer dollars to those who consistently provide quality products along with good customer service. I don't have that option with the USPS. And when I have to pay shipping costs for a product I have have ordered from a company that I enjoy doing business with, and have to put up with shoddy service from the carrier, no matter how much I complain, or report the issues, nothing is done. But they haven't had a rate decrease on their services yet. I understand that no matter how conscientious a business is run, error/mistakes are made, but if they don't do anything to rectify it, then I will not do business with them, but USPS doesn't give me that option.
My point was counter what I highlighted in red above. Private business are just as bad, and in my opinion, far worse than the USPS. I'm 74, and have never had major issues with the USPS in my lifetime. Little things, sure, but constant poor service - no. Our whole society has become accustomed to poor service and goods, and our national work ethic has gone out the window.

And then we have the other side.... I ship or receive parts almost every day through USPS. I have had exactly ONE package not make it..the rural mail carrier vehicle caught fire.... USPS replaced the part including shipping cost. My carrier picks up my click and ship prepaid packages at my door. I can track my shipments just like I do for my UPS and fedex which I also receive several times a week. USPS provide my shiping containers for free (well we know nothing is really free) and delivers them in bulk to my door as part of regular mail delivery.

Ordered a couple of parts recently to be delivered to my P.O.Box

One part....was something I need pretty quickly, the other one not.

Both parts shipped USPS priority mail.

Of course, as luck would have it.... the part I am in no hurry for arrived on time.

The other (although correctly addressed) was 'mis-shipped' to another Post Office....20 miles down the road from mine. Once that facility recognized the mistake they sent the package BACK to Houston (160 miles from me) to be 're-shipped'.

No doubt...there is some regulation or policy they must follow to have the package go back through normal channels, but a simple 'call' to my post office (just 20 miles away) would have alerted me to the problem and I could just have gone and picked it up.

Now....I won't have the package (if ever) for about another week. Somehow....this seems less than expedient.
I'll go with 'what'! USPS can be very unpredictable. I order from Amazon a lot and when USPS is the courier sometimes it will be in the package box (apartment) and others at my front door and then others at the apartment office.

USPS is not consistently good or bad. UPS and Fedex are consistently good. In 1960 you could drop a first class letter in what was called a star mailbox and if placed before noon it would be delivered anywhere in the country the next day. Good luck with that now even if in the same city. I frequently have mail delivered by my neighbors. On other days though my letter carrier goes out of his way to make a delivery to my porch. When I order bullets in a "if it fits it ships" box he really struggles. It has come to the point though that things like my utility bills I get delivered electronically because I am tired of being penalized for late payments when I don't ever receive a bill. Most of the letter carriers I know are just as depressed about the situation as the public. They work for an industry that is being replaced by electronics and except for package delivery (which is done by commercial services) what do they have to offer? As with all unionized government workers though, the cream of the crop end up getting the toughest jobs without extra reward and the slackers get the easiest jobs with the same pay scale. No rewards for doing a good job. A Burney Sanders type of world.

The amazing part is that the USPS is paid by Amazon and others in "the last mile" program and that seems to work pretty well. We've gotten Amazon packages delivered on Sunday by a USPS truck! I'm another one with excellent service on Priority Mail. But I also go out of my way to use the commercial services unless it is huge financial hit to ship with them. I never (well hardly ever) go to the bricks and mortar USPS buildings since I have a postal counter at my local dry cleaner. If I'm going to ship USPS, the dry cleaner can handle it and I'm sure that my stuff goes out that day.

Our USPS service is fairly good, just slow. Plus, I live on a rural route, so that adds one extra day to the delivery time. I have a pretty big mail box out by the road, but of course, if a package comes that won't go into the box, they leave a notice in the mail box and take the package back to the post office to hold for pickup, which basically adds another day to delivery time!

So basically, I always try to get shipping thru FedEx or UPS when I can, since they bring it right to the door and leave it if I'm not there, which is great.

What really drives me crazy is for some reason, some of the stuff I order from Amazon gets a "special" service where it gets shipped across the country by one of the big carriers (FedEx or UPS), but then when my package gets close to my general area (North Texas), they then turn around and put it in the MAIL for the final delivery to my house!!! Whyyyyyyyy???????

Perhaps speak to your postmaster at the local office. I too am on a rural route. There is no extra day involved and packages not requiring signature are left at my gate. Packages requiring signature, a notice is left and I can pick up the package that same day after 3pm and before closing time.

USPS for me is ok; just inconsistent time of delivery; sometimes by 10am, others after 5pm..but all my Amazon Prime shipments USPS stacks by my front door without fail.
Funny story (now, not then) about FedEx; my final check from the company I retired from, which included all 401k, savings + company match etc,, LITERALLY my life savings never came. FedEx showed delivery on a day I was at home, but no doorbell, knock, anything. While I'm on the phone, in the process of having another check issued, I had a brainstorm and looked under my front door welcome mat: There it was!! Luckily, even though we had been having rain, the mailer was lined on the inside, so all good.. told the lady on the phone "Nevermind" and to this day, not a big fan of FedEx. I still don't know what made me think to check under the mat, lol.
