Sometimes, but often they have the lowest cost that I can find.

It really pays to search all of the sites that have been listed in this thread. The best price really varies across sites. I buy most of my ammo from Ammoman.com, but just bought some 9mm from Sportsman Guide because their pricing was a lot better.

Right now I am looking to replenish my 45 ACP inventory, and Ammoman has 500 round cases of Federal 230 gr FMJ for 38 cents per round, including shipping. I am not finding a better price on that round and brand. Ammoman includes shipping in their prices, which is nice, but adds another step when doing comparisons.

I always file a sales/use tax return on untaxed purchases that I get from out of state.

I as well as come to a full stop behind the white line even at midnight on Sunday night in my small town and always drive 1 mph or more below the speed limit, as well as only turn right on red from the inside lane. I stop 1001' before each school that I approach when driving and unload the magazine from my AR-15 in my trunk and place it in a separate locked container. I do the same for my handguns if I'm carrying out of state or in a constitutional carry state that does not issue non-res licenses.

Anyone that suggests doing otherwise than the above is clearly in violation of forum rule 3 and should be banned forever.

Ah yes, but I only file that return that once I know that I will be using the product in the state of Texas. For now, it is just in storage. I may end up using it in another state if I move, and I would hate to deprive that new state of their rightful use tax income.

My favorite example of a crime that few even know they are committing is failure to report all income. You give a friend a ride somewhere and he pays you $10 to help with gas. That is income. Help a friend move and he offers you a case of beer as a "thank you", yep it's income.

Not probably. Is. Nobody knows how many laws are actually on the books at the federal level. Then count in regulatory policies that have the effect of law and the number jumps up even more.

Another good information source is http://gun-deals.com/. It's crowd-sourced info and is updated, typically, every few hours. If I'm buying anything other than SD ammunition, I'll always check that site first. For ammo, you select the caliber you're looking for, then you're presented with a table that includes a cost-per-round amount, and the table an be sorted a variety of ways by clicking the column headers. You can also include a shipping cost estimate by entering your zip code. Here's the current listing for .223/5.56 as an example: http://gun-deals.com/list/ammo/.223%252F5.56.

The site doesn't sell the products, only shows member-provided info from multiple vendors. You can click on any entry and drill down to details, including a pricing history of that item at that particular vendor, as well as a link to the item for sale at the vendor's website (if applicable; some reports are for items found at brick-and-mortar stores, for example).

I never buy practice/range ammo in small quantities, and Gun-Deals.com provides a quick way to get a marketplace check to see what prices are out there.

$194.99/1,000 rounds. They had another brand that they wouldn't name, but was brass-cased and selling for $179/1,000 including a plastic ammo can. I went with UMC because it's a known quantity.

The cartridges were bright and clean, not covered in shmutz like some bulk offerings:


The description (quoted above) says "This ammo is manufactured with once fired mil-spec brass.....". That is mostly true. I grabbed a handful of 17 cartridges right off the top of the batch, and lined them up to look at the headstamps. As you can see, there is a mixture of mostly GI cases, with 5 of the 17 being stamped with either ".223" or ".223 Rem". Two of the cases are headstamped "5.56", and the rest all look like Lake City.






They are currently out of stock on this item, but if it becomes available again, I'd recommend it for general purpose use. The user reviews on the product page (linked above) are mostly positive. For $289.95/1,000 rounds on today's market, that seems like a pretty good price for good brass-cased, Hornady copper-jacketed FMJ.
