Re: Pawn shop offers

Assisted living is asset based - so if the applicant listed the asset of the guns then yes a sell down is the general rule. But whoever the WOG (worker, one, government) was that recommended a pawn shop they are just stupid and plain uninformed. Betting just the subject of "guns" made them cringe. Anyway, yes, if an individual, the assets have to be low enough to qualify for an assisted living facility. However, there are a few facilities that will take a limited number of low income individuals on just their social security, maybe a small pension if any, and the assignment of life or burial insurance policies. As suggested, get with a senior advocate to determine the best route. Was this person VA? Is this person going into a regular assisted living apartment, or is this alzheimers care, or hospice care? Are there alternatives like family that SS can pay to cover the care? My MIL became ill and qualified for assisted care - once we toured the available facilities (and finished crying over what we saw), we moved her into our home and arranged for care there, and then hospice care at home in the end. I wouldn't have had it any other way despite the times my wife and I thought we just couldn't do it anymore.
