You must be some kind of genius. I've rebuilt carburetors and superbike motors, but that daggum 22/45 has gotten the best of me most of the time.george wrote:Maybe I am the only one in the history of the world that never had any problems with take-down on my Rugers?
Steel receiver, with 5 1/2 bull barrel mark 2 was the best target gun I owned. Foolishly upgraded to a High Standard Supermatic. The High Standard is more accurate with expensive Eli match ammunition, but the Ruger ate everything, all the time.

I still like NEOS 22 in Inox. But this Ruger is tempting.

Just like carburetors and superbikes, taking them apart isn't the hard part. Putting them back together and making it work is the problem. I've had a couple of the Rugers Mark series and it's just something you learn to live with. Sometimes it's a little harder than others but I've worked on many other things that were worse. Fiat X1/9's come to mind...The Annoyed Man wrote:You must be some kind of genius. Re: Ruger Mark IV Announced
Started out with a Ruger Mk II Standard a very long time ago; main problem I had was learning the exact angle of elevation to hold the barrel so the hammer strut(?) would mate properly when I re-latched the backstrap thingamajig......for getting the barrel on and off the frame, I had a little plastic headed mallet. Just tap the appropriate end of the barrel/bolt carrier to unseat/reseat the barrel on the frame. Same methodology worked on the Mk II 22/45 Stainless that replaced the Mk II Standard. I never disassembled beyond removing the bolt and taking the barrel off the frame. From there, everything was accessable for cleaning/lubrication.......george wrote:Maybe I am the only one in the history of the world that never had any problems with take-down on my Rugers?

George,
You are not the only one. I never have trouble with my 2 22/45 Mark III pistols on full disassembly and assembly. I have had different Ruger Mark I, II, and these two Mark IIIs and have never had an issue. I like these pistols a great deal. I had a Supermatic Trophy and a Victor back in the late 70's. Really great and extremely accurate bullseye pistols but I would not want to tote them around for field/plinking use.
The only ammo that mine don't consistently feed (that I have tried) is Agulia standard velocity. I load 8 rounds of Agulia standard velocity in the magazine then two rounds of any good high velocity and then have no issues function.
FWIW, I talked to the folks at Ruger when I got these two pistols and they told me that the pistol is designed for the nose shape of the CCI Mini mag and they will guarantee the pistol to shoot 1.25 inch group at 25 yards with that ammo.

The Academy's in my area currently have the Smith & Wesson Victory 22 on sale for $349.99
Only way I've seen to beat that is if you qualify for the law enforcement discount thru Buds Gun Shop, until you factor in shipping and the FFL fee.

Ironic that you just posted this. I was considering trying to find one of the new Mark IV's and then ran into a few recommendations for the Victory. Began reading up on them and it wasn't long before the "takedown screw" problem reared its ugly head.JustSomeOldGuy wrote:The Academy's in my area currently have the Smith & Wesson Victory 22 on sale for $349.99

Bottom line, the Mark IV is too new to have exposed any inherent problems but the Victory seems to have done just that. I think I'll wait a bit before plunking down $500 for a .22 pistol, or $350 for that matter.

Re: Ruger Mark IV Announced
I saw a Mark IV Hunter at the Pasadena gun show last weekend for $600. I will be curious what the price does once they get out in numbers. It will be a few months before I can even consider getting one.

FWIW
- S&W does not furnish a torque spec for the take down screw
- some shooters have a problem with the screw loosening, some do not
- lock washers or threadlock have been used with success (so far purple/loctite 222)
- gun does not cycle reliably with subsonic ammo (if you plan to use a can with the threaded barrel, I guess you find a different spring)
- from a recent post from S&W forum;
"I have had the washer on mine sine I got it and ordered the washers have run through about 2,500 rounds thru it in league and practice hasn't loosened up yet. Be warned that the lock washer isn't a standard washer it is a special sized for the allen head cap screw. A #12High Collar washer, only place I found that had them is Fastenal part# 33685 you will have to order 100 of them and the shipping will cost more than the washers. If you are going to use a thread locker use ultra-tite VC-3 theard locker, it never hardens and you can remove and re-tighten the screw and the locker will hold. Small tubes are sold on Amazon."

No, you only need to hold your mouth right, work on it during the proper phase of the moon, and mutter the proper incantations, and then it will assemble as it should. The Annoyed Man wrote:You must be some kind of genius.
