Store Clerk kills man at night attempting to steal cigarettes

Outside leaving with the cigarettes, you can shoot at night to prevent the loss of your things.

But it sounds like the man was getting the cigarettes behind the counter.

When does theft occur in a store. I know putting something in your pocket is theft in a store even if your not outside.
