Either or. MK48=torpedo, Harpoon=missile.
688 boat Los Angeles class attack submarine, did Clinton discontinue the Seawolf?
Seawolf class was replaced after three boats by the Virginia class. Not sure Clinton had anything to do with it - more likely cause is the Navy's desire to build less expensive boats.

Some good info on this thread and good links.

Most drug smuggling vessels aren't registered in a country, making them stateless and subject to boarding at sea, yes kind of like driving car without a license plate. If a suspect vessel is registered, there is a complex process in place to obtain permission of the state of registry to conduct a boarding. If circumstances dictate that the vessel has broken the law and should be seized there is another process to coordinate with the state registry to work out disposition of the vessel. Often, a non-registered vessel that is smuggling contraband (usually drugs) is interdicted the crew will attempt to dump the cargo and sink the vessel. This then puts the crew in distress and requires that they be rescued.

Posse comitatus prohibits US DoD personnel from taking law enforcement action against US citizens.

Thats one reason that the Coast Guard isn't part of DoD except during war time. The Coast Guard has a statutory law enforcement mission and arrest authority on the high seas and US seas/land. The Coast Guard lacks facilities for detaining suspects and relies heavily on coordination with their federal, state, and local LE partners.

Drugs are what most people usually associate with the Coast Guard LE role, but it also applies to human smuggling, fisheries violations and almost any other illegal thing that can be done on the water.

It sounds like the bottom line is we can do it because we say we can, and nobody is big enough to stop us.

Would a 50' long fiberglass-hulled narco sub even slow down a Mk48, let alone detonate it? Enquiring minds want to know.

Possibly. One thing for certain, if it did there will be no trace of the narco sub remaining. I'd pay to see that

I don't think there would be enough metal for Mk48 sonar to detect that it had reached its target.

No, the bottom line is that international law allows it.

If my information is correct a MK48 can be programmed to seek a paticular sound signature and go after that! Since any sea going vessel would have some propulsion the MK48 could be programmed to attack that sound!

That got changed thanks to Bill Clinton, we can now say 800 feet. He accidentally released that info during a press conference back in 1996 or 1997
