My mother's entire family is deeply rooted in the Methodist Church- my fore fathers were Methodist preachers before the Methodist and United Brethren churches merged to form the United Methodist Church. I was christened, raised in, married in and active in the UMC. Then liberalism began seeping into church doctrine. To borrow a quote from Reagan - I didn't leave the UMC, it left me.

It doesn't surprise me in the least that the daughter of the slain officer was treated this way - liberals are without a doubt the most hateful and hurtful people in America these days.
:iagree:

My background and my beliefs are much the same.

I found the post on Facebook made by Heidi Smith and shared it. This needs to get out as far and wide as it can.

Take a look at their facebook page. We have dropped their rating to a 2.9 and falling.

My mother is a member of her local UMC.
Except for some funerals, and to introduce my daughter to religion over 30 years ago, I haven't attended since I was 16.

I determined early on that I believed that religion was the root of most war deaths in the total history of mankind and that organized religion was an anathema to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. So I stay away from such.

It is now down to 2.8 and they may have realized their error.

This is an excerpt from their page 28 minutes ago.
The invitation was intended to help a family heal, and we very much look forward to Victoria’s first serve in the volleyball match Saturday.

The message to them said something to the effect that " the program was not aware that the ceremonial first serve would happen at the game." Once they found out, they decided to not go through with it for sensitivity reasons. When else would the 'first serve' happen if not AT the game?

I shared it, I pray will say a Prayer for the Smith family.

I saw SMU made a statement about this, and are still standing by their initial invitation. I am not sure if anyone else saw that but it can be found on their (SMU) facebook page.

Oldgringo wrote:"....diversity within the SMU community....", what does that mean? FWIW, the official written position of the United Methodist Church is strongly anti gun.

Religious institutions/facilities are places that I do not have to go. If my gun isn't welcome, neither am I.
I think it means that they don't want to be insensitive to the members of their community who like to kill police officers.

The SMU Facebook page includes their statement about the original invitation, stating "we very much look forward to Victoria’s first serve in the volleyball match Saturday."

Interestingly enough, they also have a statement about a ceremony to honor our veterans; two of the first few comments about that ceremony were:
"Are you actually going to honor Veterans? Pretty sure you will back out last second to protect the special snowflakes"
"So why can't we honor fallen Dallas police officers? I hope anyone considering gong to your school in the future will reevaluate based on your total lack of backbone."
Maybe they have learned their lesson.

I'm going to try to keep the rage out of my words; wish me luck. If I break some forum rule, please delete this post.

Their attitude is that honoring fallen police officers is insensitive to black people. This implies several things, the most horrible of which is that all black people kill police officers. Taking it down a notch, it at the very least implies that the police and the black population are opposed to one another, and that their interests are mutually exclusive. Both of the implications are obviously and fundamentally untrue. Perpetuating this mindset is morally reprehensible. Creating an "us versus them" attitude between the black community and law enforcement is irresponsible, divisive, inflammatory, and most of all racist.

They actually think honoring a police officer who died while protecting a group protesting police officers is racially insensitive? What do they think implying that the people he was protecting that day would be offended by honoring his sacrifice on their behalf is? I don't think I can continue while remaining civil. Someone else feel free to pick up where I'm leaving off. My hands are shaking too much to type.
