I don't have any stats about knives, but I have done some training on defending against a knife and using a knife in self-defense, and getting a knife out of the hand of someone determined to use it is NOT EASY. A lot harder than stripping a pistol, once you are "in contact." If you carry it in a way that is visible to others, then you run the risk of losing it to someone sees it and initiates a surprise attack with the objective of taking your knife, but once you have it in hand, using it vigorously, rapidly, and repeatedly is awfully hard to defend against.

As far as "not getting close enough to use a knife" -- that's not really a choice you get to make with any reliability.

As for the OP's primary question -- looks legal to me, I did not immediately think "Bowie" when I saw it but as AndyC said, the law is mush on knife definitions. The main non-legal problem with it that I see is that it is very long overall, and that makes it harder to conceal and deploy (like someone else above said).

It looks legal to me I've been carrying knives ever since I got my Whittlin' Chip Card in Cub Scouts. I occasionally carry knives with 5-5.5" blades, even folders in that range.
