Back when I travelled a lot I checked into the Long Beach Hilton. The desk clerk refused to recognize my Hilton Diamond card at check in. Instead of free breakfast a bowl of oatmeal cost me $12.00. The stay was not satisfactory. When I returned to my office in Texas I received the typical survay, and filled it out as extremely unsatisfactory. Ten minutes after I hit "send" my phone rang. It was Hilton's VP of customer service. She wanted me to explain what happened. After I told her she said someone would call me soon.
30 minutes later I received a call from the LBH manager who was begging my forgiveness. He told me I would receive a letter authorizing me a three day-two night stay at any Hilton hotel for two world wide at their expense and told me to be certain and use the special code contained in the letter when I scheduled the stay and to call the hotel direct and not schedule it on-line.
My wife and I were going to a Shake Russell concert at the old Balinese Room in Galveston. The Galveston Hilton had just been expanded and renovated so I called and set up the weekend like I was instructed.
Mrs. Anygun and I arrived at the hotel on Friday around Noon. I went to the desk and identified myself. The young lady at the desk asked me to wait just a second and hurried off. Soon the manager came out and began barking orders to the bell hops, the parking guy came in and took my keys. They took our luggage to the room and assured me my room was reasy. Top floor penthouse suite. When we were shown into the room there were flowers in the room, a nice chardonnay on ice, a nice cabernet ready to open in case we preferred reds (we do). Chocolates on the pillows. Free mini-bar.
Mrs Anygun said something about travel being so nice and I assured her this was not the norm.
We ate dinner at one of our favorite restaurants and had a nice evening. When we arrived at the hotel our sheets were turned down and rose petals were scattered on the sheets, which I thought was a bit much. Mrs Anygun enjoyed a bath with special oils and stuff.
When we arrived for breakfast we were shown to a reserved table and told to ignore the regular menu because the chef would cook us whatever we wanted. Mimosas for beverage as well. The other guests were whispering and wondering who we were.
Sometimes expressing unsatisfactory service helps especially when you are a loyal customer.
