I got bull hide. I also got cow hide on my Crossbreed. I have been pleased with both. Besides, I'm fond of horses.

You guys convinced me to try a belt from Beltman. I ordered a black 1.5" belt without the stiffener.

I'm fairly certain you won't be dissapointed! It's very easy to put a belt buckle on it as well if that's your thing. Report back when you get it!

Going by their length limitations, I would assume like other high end horse leather products they are using the butt, or Cordovan leather. It definitely is the toughest leather out there.

It has no grain direction, therefore, it cannot crack and will last a lifetime. Highest quality shoes have used it for centuries. Regular leather eventually cracks out in the toe bends. In archery, it's the premium used in string tabs for your fingers, as it cannot be worn out like cow leather, but we can only get it in small scraps, if we can find it at all. The market for it is tight, as there's somewhat a monopoly on the stuff.

It also is extremely moisture resistant which is why leather galoshes were once made of it. It's also very tedious and expensive to tan, and because it's limited in size, because it's only located under the rump, it's limited in length.

By it's nature, it "should" make a much better belt, as over time, cow leather changes from repeated bending and stress, where I know from experience Cordovan never changes no matter how much you abuse it. But, the devil is in the details on what and how these belts are constructed.

My new belt was delivered today. That's rather remarkable since I ordered it Friday night around 9:00PM!

I got the black 1.5" version and the workmanship is excellent. I used to make holsters years ago and dying black is the hardest color to get right. It fits perfectly with both IWB and OWB holsters. I like the 3/4" hole spacing with 7 holes, rather than the standard 1" spacing with only 5 holes. This makes it possible to use a wide verity of holsters with varying holster-to-belt distances in both Avenger and Pancake style holsters.

If you order a belt, be sure to use the measuring method described on the website. Don't go by your pant size!

I think the quality is fantastic. I ordered two embossed belts last week that I will use for church. I changed my mind after I paid for them. I wanted an extra option. I sent David at Beltman a message and he answered that on a Saturday and allowed me to make the changes.

Great quality and great communication is a plus in my book.

Several years ago I purchased a horsehide belt with the velcro lining. About two years ago or so I bought two more quick delivery belts. While I would forgo the velcro lining on my next custom order, I think that the horsehide option is worth the extra money. All three have been great, but the horsehide seems to hold it's shape a little better and since I wear it every day that matters. It may be the moisture resistance that makes the difference, especially in Texas summers.
