It depends on his tolerance for recoil and size / weight concerns. Personally, I have a lightweight J frame (S&W 360PD) for deep concealment. That thing fits anywhere. Pocket, ankle, waist, etc., with no issues. It weighs a whopping 11 ounces. But it is pricey (just over $800), and it is a beast to shoot with .357 mag rounds. Even .38's are a bit uncomfortable.
I also have a Ruger SP-101. Not really suited for anything other than OWB carry, IMHO, due to it's larger size and weight. But it is a pleasure to shoot 38's and even .357 mag rounds are manageable.
Then I have my Ruger GP-100. I don't carry that gun at all. It sits in a safe by my bed, and/or in the car. It is actually pretty accurate and is easy to shoot with any ammo.
