Excess guns

Ditto on others’ opinions regarding the made up term “excess guns.”

I do, however, have a few barter guns. A few belonged to my dad and a few belonged to my FIL. Several from both will problem never leave my possession while I’m still breathing, but those barter guns may not be worth enough to actually barter with. Now that’s got me to thinking about those gun buy-back things.

I know it’s even slightly sacrilegious to say something like that and I would certainly post those items here first in case there were any interest from y’all before resorting to such other drastic measures. So, keep an eye out. Maybe there’ll be a big for sale post in my near future.

I wouldn't say odd.....I'd just say uniquely.....different.

I have a Stallard JS9 aka hipoint. Thing jams every 3rd round. But it’s built like a brick so I am keeping it in case I ever run out of hammers or door stops. It would make a fine either one of those.

about the first part, I'm not agreeing about the "odd" part.

I put my guns in categories, like "nightstand gun", "micro-carry", "compact carry", "regular carry", "car/truck gun", "Competition guns", "Fun / Range guns". If a category could be filled with only one gun "nightstand gun" for example, and I have 4 or 5, then it's time to think about selling a few.

I've also put myself on a reduction plan of sorts. I'm trying to get rid of 2 or 3 guns for every 1 new one that I acquire. Unfortunately, this plan isn't going all that well at the moment.

The only guns I have that I would say were excess are the ones that my dad or grand dad left me. Those have a separate safe and are kept to hand down to my son and grandsons when I am gone. No way I turn loose of one.
Now I have a couple of “barter” guns but even those I don’t mind keeping. All of mine are going to my kids someday

Yep, got a 16" mid length AR that I built before I got into SBRs and AKs. Just sits in the safe now, probably 60 rounds through it. I might as well sell that one to someone who will use it.

Well, the first one that comes to my mind is my Marlin 1895G Guide Gun in .45-70 Gov’t. I’ve wanted one for years, and the one I own now is a VERY nice pre-Remington JM stamped example, but I’ve found that I just don't enjoy shooting it. I never used to be recoil sensitive until I bought this rifle. I’ve come to the conclusion that .45-70 Gov’t is similar to a 500 Kt Russian thermonuclear warhead I was reading about just yesterday, for which hitting 500 meters from a hardened target was considered a direct hit achieving total destruction of the target. I’ve had the devil's own time zeroing this rifle because it beats the snot out of me, and I don’t want to fire enough rounds to achieve and verify zero. I’m guessing that a .45-70 hit ANYWHERE on a game animal's body is considered a direct hit, achieving total destruction of the target. I’ve tried selling it here for a few months now, but all of y’all are as scared of it as I am.

I think that .45-70 is a good reloader's platform for anyone interested in reloading....... Andy ......

I’d be open to trading a Jm stamped Model 1895G in .45-70, with upgraded sights, 118 unfired factory rounds, and 62 pieces of once-fired brass, for a nice example of a 21" FAL built on a DSA receiver, with a couple of proper magazines.

Not really scared of it, but I already have one of my own. I agree that it's best to reload for it too. I've found that Trail boss loads for both my 1895 and 1894 make them much more enjoyable to shoot (.44 Mag using Trail Boss in the 1894 is a hoot - like a .22LR but with feeling downrange.). The .45-70 in a Marlin is good for mild to wild loads. I can testify that a Remington 405gr JSP over a healthy Marlin-only load of powder will completely core a piggy that is running directly away and not stop (the bullet that is..., the pig comes immediately to a complete stop). Actually, I imagine that it would do that even over a Springfield level load.
