I would disagreee with this. Why burden the operator with this? Just call information and ask for the number. 1-800-Free-411. It really is free. You just have to listen to an ad.
If I need the police or an ambulance, I might not have time to listen to an ad.

It may be me showing my age, but I remember being taught that I could always dial "O" (as in operator) and be transferred to the non-emergency or the emergency number for whatever service I needed.

Has anyone tried this in recent years?

S, just exactly how antidevulidian can you be?
Do you still use a horse and buggy to go to work?
Actually, I still dial "O" every time I get stuck with the numbers routine on the phone, I am just too old and set in my ways to put up with dialing "1" for English. I shall not put up with a compooter generated voice, either!

I drive a wrecker in the FTW area. I could post atleast 10 stories a day on DUMB drivers.
I did see a cool shirt at the Bike Rally this weekend.
The shirt is bright orange
The back reads......Can You See Me Now
The front reads...... BADD...= Bicker Against DUMB Drivers

It seems the days that I drive right...doing the speed limit...I get called in on the most.....
I have been called in on many times for doing no more tha 2mph over the speed limit.
Caller tells my boss...anything from...I just wanted to let you know that your driver is going a little fast....to....well, you how CRAZY they can get.

Sorry, but I might have missed the whole point of the original question. I thought it was in reference to NON-EMERGENCY situations. Obviously if you need police officer or ambulance for an emergent situation dial 911.

Also - yes, 911 operators get paid to answer phones. Why take time away from a possible emergency to say - "Uhh can you please transfer me, to non-emergency line, my neighbors dog is barking."

By the way, 311 works from a cell phone in greater Houston. ( don't know exactly what's so great)

Yep, same here . . . I don't care what an idiot thinks of my driving (anyone who tries to pick a fight with someone who may be armed IS an idiot!) so I wave, smile, and let him think I'm apologizing for whatever the heck he thinks I did.

So he drives off thinking I'm a wimp, and I didn't escalate the situation to the point where I have to kill him . . . and if my wave/smile/shrug technique doesn't work at some time in the future, at least I'll know that all the escalation will have been on his part.
