We have eliminated door to door sales-pests.

At the entrance to my driveway, I have a 36' gate tied in at both ends to a three rail corral fence. I don't lock the gate, but it's ALWAY's closed. Since installing it, I haven't had any trouble with anyone trying to sell me anything. Of course, once past the gate it's also a bit of a highly exposed and relatively long walk to get to the house, so I'm sure that always adds to the equation...

Obviously, I'm a bit out in the country and that fact alone cuts down on sales types, but prior to the gate and fence, I installed two four inch wooden posts on either side of driveway entrance and a length of wire rope for a gate. Cheap and effective. It seems that people get the message with barriers.

At least this has my experience. If however a stranger has the cojones to ignore your gate and come onto your property it should really raise a red flag.
