Contact the DA first and ask what authority there is for them. It is my understanding, and I could be wrong, that SCOTUS ruled that checkpoints were illegal unless there was a state law authorizing them and describing how they are to be conducted. There is no such law in Texas, as witnessed by the bill introduced to allow them.

The use of these by police would be doing a search without PC! If they don't have any reason to stop me they have no reason to see what is under my clothes!

I saw a demonstration of a prototype of this technology a couple of years ago. The system I saw was coupled to a CCTV surveillance system and seemed to work pretty well. Never forget that the technology that is released to private industry is at least one generation behind what is being developed now. This is a very invasive technology but it is available and will be put into service.

Funny funny! I was thinking more along the lines of everyone in Texas has a knife on them! Makes you want to carry 12 firearms, just so you can REALLY set the thing off in a crowd :).

I'm thinking about having someone with a CNC plasma cutter make me a couple of thin steel gun silhouettes to slip inside the lining of a coat. Maybe a SPAS-12 and a suppressed Uzi.

Nope, uses induction, hysteresis, and Hall effect, so all that needs to be present is a conductor. It's the same reason that the airport metal detectors can detect silver and gold jewelry.

Fascinating.
We have a "ferrous" metal detector at work, and it only triggers off of ferrous metals. handy bugger.
