As I've said before in a similar discussion, I used to be one of the receipt checkers at H-E-B. They are not as bad as some stores and will only ask for your receipt if the alarm goes off. Even then all they do is quickly scan your receipt/items to see what might have set the alarm off, let the person go, and record the item. I never understood the purpose of doing that, but it was what I was required to do. Deactivating the tag was automated in our checkstands. The little white stickers (oscillators inside) got a blast of RF energy that fried a diode so that they wouldn't "ring" back at the door scanners. This would have nothing to do with checker proficiency.

From the perspective of the poor minimum wage kid checking your bags, I always felt bad for having to look in people's stuff. A lot of times what sets the alarms off are "personal" items that are embarassing to most people. I did my best to be respectful and not change my expression.

I honestly never really cared if someone didn't stop. I would stop asking them once I realized they were consciously ignoring me. Some people are just oblivious. The only person I would make more of a stink about would be if a repeat theif set off the alarm. Believe it or not but the guys I worked with kept pretty good track of who was a known theif and they always got a watchful eye. They would be spotted entering the store and the other shrink control guys (aka receipt checkers) would be on the look-out.

I myself don't mind the receipt checking so long as I don't have to go out of my way. A quick mark on the receipt doesn't bother me. I do however have no problem walking right past them as I know they are not accomplishing anything based off my experience.

I would hope that everyone realizes it is not the Elderly one at the door or the Young one at the door it is the cooperate office.

Yall....I gotta side with Diode here ....think getting shorts all in a wad over this....the checker near door are usually real polite (customer oriented persons) and do protect the store interests from items double rung up (that happened to me and the checker found it...and got me a refund in like 2 minutes)...Gosh, guess never put much thought as to infringement issues on me...whether at Costco, Wally, Best Buy, Sams, etc.

I'm with Skip and Diode. To me, those checks are to make sure their cashiers are ringing up stuff properly and not just pretending to scan stuff for their friends or family.

Now don't get me wrong, I have a limit to how much I will put up with. If the stupid alarm goes off as I go out the door, I am not marching back in to let them dig thru my stuff. I have seen them "Make" people go back in to make sure they didnt steal something, I wont do that! I just move on, at that point they will need a LEO to stop me.

They wanna peak into my bag "Inside" the store before I exit, that I can deal with.

Sam's club I'll stop mostly cause I'm with the SO and she'd probably have a problem with just walking past them even if the line is a mile long.

other places if the line is to long and its not a "membership" store like Sam's I'd just walk past them.

if the alarm goes off and i know i paid for everything i keep waking cause i know i paid for everything and they are going to have to call the cops if they really want to check me.

Courts have held that the alarm activating IS REASONABLE GROUNDS, and they have legal authority to stop you and investigate. They can use reaonable force to do so also.

I always stop if the alarm goes off to let them check.
I think, if you have a problem with it, you need to let the manager know or write the corporate office. Those are the people that make the decisions. If they get the vibe that they could be losing business, they may just stop it.
Sam's Club actually gets on my nerves the worst about checking receipts. I think its b/c they come across as shopping cart Nazis when you don't stop and produce a receipt immediately.
I don't argue with them, since I'm mooching off of Mom's membership anyway.
