You're probably right about probation, if it's their first offense. Even criminals who are convicted and sentenced to long terms seems to get out quickly.
Hopefully they will have learned that robbing women of their purses doesn't get them much money, and they'll stick to shoplifting.
(I know that IDs can be used to commit identity theft, but that requires a certain level of IQ and leaves a paper trail.)

Maybe they'll learn not to leave behind witnesses who can ID them.
