My 2 favourites are 1911's and Browning hi-powers.

The 'official' 1911A1 is a single stack .45acp pistol, but they are so popular they come in all sizes and calibres from various manufacturers in various countries. They can be had in calibres from .22lr to 50GI and even 357 if you can find a used Coonan for sale or 45 winchester magnum if you can find a Grizzly.

I believe single stack are the most common, but several manufacturers (Para, STI, SVI, Caspian, Les Baer,etc) make double stack versions. Para makes the P18-9 which gives you 18rnds of 9mm in the factory magazine.

Several companies make "GI" type models that resemble the WWII military issue version.

Here's the down and dirty...The following assumes you are talking about a Colt...
Govt. = 5 inch barrel and standard single stack with 7 round magazine (some 8 round mags will also fit flush to the grip)
Commander = 4.25 inch barrel and single stack with 7 round magazine (some 8 round mags will also fit flush to the grip). The original Commander Model had an aluminum alloy frame. Newer ones are referred to as lightweight Commanders.
Combat Commander = Same as above but with a steel frame.
Officer's = 3.5 inch barrel and single stack with 6 round magazine ( the grip frame is shorter than the govt or commander models)

Tactical = All the stuff that makes John Moses Browning roll over in his grave...full length guide rods, beavertails, extended slide stops, mudflaps, curb feelers, picatinney rails for mounting a Q Beam, OK...I got carried away...

Thanks smyrna....mine are Govt and Combat Commander. 100% sure on those but the other I was not 100%. I agree with you statement about JB...he would be shaking his head. You just need to be able to shoot the thing!
