I have never "lost" a gun (thank God) or ever worried about loosing a carry piece. I've formed some what of a habit of elbow checking just to make sure it's still there every so often. It's to a point where it's mostly subconscious. There's definitely a very conscious realization if it has shifted and doesn't feel exactly right.
I'm more concerned about forgetting a gun when I head to the range with half a dozen or so firearms. I have to make a mental checklist of what I'm leaving with and double/triple check it when leaving.
If I ever did discover a missing firearm I would be reporting it ASAP. Even if there's no legal requirement to do so (I don't know that there is or is not) it seems in your best interest to do so.
