I may have mentioned this before. I never understood the fuss over 1911s, until I got a 5" RIA Tactical. Then, with the first round, the scales fell from my eyes.

Y'all are going to make me really want one. I've fancied a 1911 since I was a teenager but never have put the money down for one.

Why a 1911? Next year the 1911 will celebrate its 100th anniversary (and we should throw a really big party!). You might not fully appreciate that fact until you think about all of the countless pistol designs that have come and gone within that time period. John Browning was a bona fide genius, and he simply got it right. 90% of the modern modifications that 'improve' on his basic design are ancillary, nice-to-have add-on's. To have withstood that test of time through several generations and STILL be going strong as one of today's most popular and beloved handguns is the ultimate testament to its fundamental design and value.

(Oh yeah, let's not forget it was the basis for most every other semi-auto handgun that came after it...)

And better yet...why not a 1911?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I seem to recall reading somewhere that the 1911 was designed in 1908, and not adopted by the military until 1911. Is that true?


If so, we may have missed the actual 100 year mark.



I completely dig my Kimber Custom Compact, BTW. I started out with a 5" Springfield (fine weapon, but I couldn't comfortably carry it).

My next 1911 was a 3" Kimber Ultra Carry with CT grips. (didn't like shooting it, too much barrel flip IMO)

Now I have a 4" Kimber Custom Compact. It's the right one.

The 1911 design was started in the 1890's. Colt submitted the 1911 platform for the 1906 Army trials. The trials lasted until early 1911. During this time many changes were made to the guns that were submitted to the trials including the 1911. The final modifications were made in 1911 and hence the name...1911.

Got my first 1911 31 years ago(it has mesquite wood grips). I now have 7 and possibly number 8 this weekend. One Colt, five Paras, One Kimber and they all work great. Bbls go from 3" to 5" and I really could not pick a favorite if I had to.

I think yall have convinced me to get one now. The gun shop next to my office has a RIA for around 449, he had all the guns put up so was refering to memory for price however I forgot to ask him if it is new or used. Also the shooting range I go to has a used one for $420 but but the magazine was a tight fit, the guy who worked there told me that was natural for the RIA...and Im convinced that they jack up their prices so their members(which I am not) think theyre getting a good deal on a used firearm (5% off listed price for members). They do have a RIA on their rental list now so im gonna check it out and see if I like the way it shoots. Thanks again for all the helpful info.

Now, AndyC and I both have 1911s with aftermarket magwells, not to mention a couple of other "foul" geegaws. Are we both bound for perdition?

I have jacked with some of mine so much Perdition wont even take me.
