$10000 fine and 2 years in jail is still better than a dead child. Not much chance you would get that anyway. Only if there are witnesses that would testify that the dog was not acting aggressivly. I would say he was and I was in fear for the childs safety. There is too much history of aggressive dogs killing children and pets, and even adults to allow Pit Bulls to be hanging around my yard, ain't gonna happen.

Anyone who thinks Pits are no different than other breeds and it's all how you raise them, you need to educate yourself. You need to ask someone who breeds them if you can find one that will be honest about this subject. All these stories about being around Pits all day and not once did I see one acting aggressive mean nothing. There is no predicting when something flips the switch. You can say the same thing about panthers or bears or tigers. They have NO business around children. To me the worst part is that almost every Pit owner I know is someone that wants to be a bad guy but isn't one. They are trying to project an image of a bad guy through their dog. I wish I could get on a jury in one of these cases where a Pit or any dog really attacks a child. There would be no probation if I had my way. Sorry for my strong feelings on this, I just feel like Pits are what they are and they are what they were bred to be and that's not something that needs to be un controled or around children. Most of their owners are on ego trips and I have no sympathy for them.

I watched my buddy's pit for a about two weeks once. Never had a problem while he was under my care because I treated him like a dog that can't be trusted. Always on a leash, free in my room with the door closed, or in his cage. Not because I was afraid of the breed reputation, but because I'd been roommates with his owner and knew the dog well.

When my buddy came to pick him up he let the dog out of his cage and expected him to just hang out next to him while we talked as we were walking to his car. Granted, he's done this before with no problem. Well one of the neighborhood dogs came trotting up with my dog and my buddy's pit went straight for the neighbor's dog totally unprovoked. After we pulled them off each other my buddy said, "Well that dog was taunting him" ... what? :banghead:

Don't get me wrong, I love pits, but I take precautions to protect everything around them.

Pit bulls are not pets. They do just what they were bred to do, kill. I'm not even going to blame the dogs, they are what they are, the owners on the other hand should know better.

A hypothetical here: Walking along, you encounter some punk walking his pit bull. The guy gives the dog some slack and the dog comes in your direction growling and snarling and snapping it's jaws. The dog is obviously in the attack mode. Should you shot the dog, or the controller? :headscratch

Can you cite the Texas Code?

Just wonderin', because that rings no bells.

I think you shoot both. But it is very important, you shoot the dog first.

Assuming the owner has the dog on a leash, you should expect to be cuffed and stuffed. Be wary of judging an owner just by the type dog he is walking. I'm a pit owner, CHL holder, law abiding citizen, and if I'm walking my dog on a leash under my control and you pull out your gun to shoot my dog merely because it growls at you, expect to have a gun pointed right back at you as you are now a threat to me.

Edit: My comment above was more or less to point out that you should not ASSUME that all pit owners are punks who need a pitbull to supplement their ego (like one of the previous posters stated). Didn't intend it to be an attack or threat against you. My point was, be wary of how you make blanket judgements on pit bull owners, some of them have CHL's too and are responsible citizens that will defend against a threat to their leashed pet and themselves.

I agree...This is a breed that has natural aggressive tendencies...They can very easily become a product of their environment as well, if it is condusive to those tendencies...

A dog can be a dog as well...If they are trained properly, and their environment is created to play down negative traits, they can be almost like any other domesticated animal or pet you can own...

Its up to the owners...

Just my opinion...

It seems as though there is a breed of CHLers who have agressive tendencies as well.

Now, if it is a Mormon pit bull, all bets are off! :fire
