As for them walking you out, the older gentleman at Cabela's who was walking me out when I bought my 642 told me it was so that if I decide to kill myself that it doesn't get the store messy. He mentioned two previous instances where someone bought a gun, ammo, and a ride to the other side. I don't remember if it was at that specific store or at others.

One of them was in Kansas City in 2005 across from the race track in a Cabelas parking lot. I was over at the race track at the time and saw all the commotion. Guy bought a shotgun and ammo and went to his vehicle in the parking lot, loaded up and threatened to kill himself if anyone came near. The police approached and he killed himself. I had been in the store only about 30 minutes prior to this happening. Even if they had walked this guy to the door it wouldn't have stopped anything. He did it in the parking lot in his own vehicle and didn't hurt anyone else.

Not to bash all of the "local" dealers, but part of the perk is the personal service. My last visit, I browsed for 15 minutes before departing without being acknowledged. Higher prices and lack of service vs. lower prices and lack of service - I tend to go with the latter.

As a footnote, my family owned a "local" and was forced out by a non-local - so I understand the need to support.

Agreed... and I do... but not with complete exclusivity.

Since I've been in Texas, 4 years now, my purchasing pattern looks like this:

Small shop in Euless: one M1A, three 1911 pattern pistols (Kimber, Sig, Taurus), one 642 revolver, one Glock 19, one Keltec P3AT, one shotgun, and a stripped lower and parts kit for an AR15 carbine - not to mention sundries and gunsmithing services.

Small gun dealer in Lewisville: one M1A, one Remington 700 VSF + Leupold scope, one RRA AR15 varmint rifle, one Kimber 1911.

Sportsmans Warehouse (Lewisville): One AR15 varmint rifle + Burris XTR scope, one Savage 10FP-HS Precision + Bushnell scope, one HK USP Compact .40.

Cabelas (Ft Worth): one 642CT revolver.

Cheaper than Dirt: one M&P340 revolver.

Gun show purchases (not big box stores): two .22 LR pistols, one M&P 45, parts to assemble a second AR15 carbine.

Small dealers win: 22 to 4.

I've never been escorted out of WM for buying ammo. But...most of the clerks know me as LE so that may be a factor but I think I've seen other people walk out with it too.

I have never been escorted out of Wal-Mart with ammo either but they do make you purchase it at the gun counter and then they bag it up (double bag if you have bought several boxes). I have even had them knot the bag at one Wally World.

I have no problem with any of that. I do have a problem with showing my DL and signing for ammo at Sports Authority though

Well, I was told 1 to 30 days for the background check to be approved.

Thought it was within 3 from my one experience before having a CHL. Oh well, they said they'd call me.

I was getting antsy, so I called them and sure enough, after hanging up on me the first time and then passing me around to 5 different people the second time, it turns out my background check was approved (imagine that ).

I will never buy another gun from Academy if I don't have to. I surely won't expect my CHL to be worth anything to them, and I'll plan on waiting a few days for the purchase to clear.

Pity, they had some Ruger LCPs for a pretty fair price.

EDIT: Took another hour to actually pick up the gun. Idk how many times I had to point to them on their card where major credit card statements count as proof of residency. The lady behind the counter even told me that I was too honest and should have only showed my DL, CHL, and not my GC.

Sort of on thread-----I recently purchased two boxes of 9mm at my local Wally World, and they told me I had to pay right there, at that counter. No problem. I paid, the YOUNG man bagged my boxes, put the receipt inside the bag and handed it to me. I proceeded to stroll around the store with the lovely bride for an hour out of my life I'll never get back packing a Beretta on my hip and three magazines of ammo (all concealed, of course) and two boxes of 9mm in a plastic bag. My wife saw to it that the ammo was not lonely in the cart for long, however......

I guess they were worried that I would pocket the two boxes of ammo and not pay up front......or there was no one available for escort duty.....

Apparently, some Wal-Marts are experiencing theft of ammo between Sporting Goods and the front POS. Our W-M in Jacksonville requires payment for ammo in Sporting Goods as do the W-M's in Tyler and Lufkin. Is it an east Texas thing?

Nope


I've bought ammo in five different walmarts since the mid 90s in North and South Carolina and if they had to take it out of the case, they wanted me to pay for it there. If it was on the shelf (shotgun shells), I have either paid for it there or have carried it around with everything else in my cart.
