I met an old high school friend a few weeks ago for a sandwich downtown (Dallas) while he was in town for the Safari Club convention.
It was the day of the Green Bay playoff game.
Mostly we watched the game.
During commercials we talked guns.
At some point he pulled out his wallet and showed me his pretty gold Concealed Handgun shield.
I had a few beers at this point (No, I was not carrying) and didn't want to get into a what the heck is that for discussion.
I shook my head and didn't ask.
He is definitely a cop wannabe.
Next time we meet I'll ask him what he would do with it and when he would present it.
Maybe I could answer some of the questions we all have about "Why".

I do not think it is carried by most to impersonate an officer, rather that it makes them feel special.

Nope, you can't have green... green is used by the Fire Service to identify the Incident Command Post during a working incident.

I haven't seen him so much since we did bad things together in high school in the, heh hemmmm, 70's.

Well, it looks like the colored lights are all spoken for. Y'all reckon anybody still makes those big bronze bells that used to adorn the front of steam locomotives and fire engines? The outstretched cape flying in the breeze is not sufficient notice...is it.

My understanding Nevada is an open carry state and the Costco did not have a firearms prohibited sign. One would then expect some customers would either conceal carry (with the proper permit) or open carry in the Costco in question. It is surprising then that none of this was gone over with the employees of Costco that this was perfectly legal and nothing to worry about.

Unfortunately all the video cameras at Costco were not working during the entire incident so we cannot confirm that Erik Scott was acting normally or out of the ordinary. Funny how all these off brand storage places have working video here in Houston, though.

I suspect brandishing a badge of any kind probably would have gotten him killed quicker.

But yes, leaving at the first sign of trouble with the security employee would have been the best thing for him to have done. I think we all agree and all of us plan to make that our mantra at the first sign of trouble while carrying.

I visited the Costco in question on my last trip to Las Vegas. I still didn't see a firearms prohibited sign, it could have been added since the shooting, but I didn't see it.

Nice store, upper middle class customers in a very upper middle class neighborhood. Actually the last place you would expect to see any sort of crime, criminal or police shooting. It was very hard to believe it had happened in this location. The wealth of the area, the beautiful landscaping, put you very much at ease. Hard to imagine that anyone could have thought they were about to be killed by the police in such a peaceful locale.
