Keep in mind, at least as far as my opinion goes, that the APD is not necessarily the joke here. They are doing what they are told, and considering the large number of weapons in one spot, it's a good idea that they will be around.

From what I saw on the TV, the APD is telling people to put their guns in bags and bring them to the buy back. They are requested not to take the guns out of the bag until asked to do so. It seems to me like the APD is asking people to carry concealed weapons (in a bag). It is a reasonable assumption that many of those who will carry their guns there in bags will not have a CHL. Isn't the APD encouraging people to commit a crime this way?

I don't know, is it illegal to carry guns into a gun show? Bagged, cased or out in the open? As long as they are carrying in their car or on the church private property, and of legal age, it should be OK. Rifles are always legal but if you take a handgun off of the property on public right of way either concealed without a license, or open, you are probably breaking the law.

No, it is an event requiring a gun to be at. Like going to the range, a contest, shop for repair, gun show, etc. You are allowed to take your gun to those places without a chl, but it is confusing as you cant conceal or open carry it. I assume most do it cased or in a bag. Go to a gun show and you see lots of rifles but most pistols are cased.

At the June 2010 Austin PD gun buyback, very few people who had long guns
had them in a bag. Handguns of course, were much more likely to be bagged
or cased.
What was kind of an eye opener that day was 2 or 3 guys who had seriously
sawed-off shotguns. They were not hassled by the police in any way and were
able to turn them in without issue.
Now if they had been stopped for speeding while on the way to the gun buyback
event, an arrest might have been made. I'm just sayin' ......

IMPORTANT INFO!!! You will NOT receive cash for your weapon(s)! Although the brochure says "Cash for Guns", it is misleading. What you WILL receive is a Chase Visa Debit "gift card" in the amount allotted. You cannot redeem this card for cash.....so give up the idea that you can put some money with this and apply it toward that special gun purchase you wanted so badly.

This was truly a disappointment to me, because I had such an idea....

Bummer!

Cyclops:
IMHO, it's not much of a problem that APD disperses the money on Visa gift cards.
If you wanted to take that Visa gift card for $100, and add some cash, you could go
buy your new gun at anyplace that accepts Visa. Where's the problem?
Leading up to the June 2010 APD gun buyback, I believe there was some talk of
"Guns for groceries", but since the payment is a Visa debit card, you don't have
to buy groceries. Go get a new gun. Academy takes Visa, as do gun show dealers.

Thanks but I was fortunate enough to get it to the range before last weekend and it worked flawlessly. I had to replace a plastic buffer and completely break down the weapon and soak it in cleaner. I also had to use a small pick and remove lots of lil pieces of copper jacket that sheared of when rounds were loaded into the chamber... She is a keeper now. Shooting 1" groups at 25 yards with my 4x scope :)
