Thanks, I was wondering about that myself. Amazing that it's so "cheap" for them....

US GIs also fire a lot of amno, it cost them nothing, paid by uncle sam (you and me). Not saying wasting ammo is a good thing or okay. Those rebels in Libya did not pay for their arms or ammo. They raided Libya goverment's arms depots, funded by oil money.

A few years back when I worked for the Palm Beach (FL) Post newspaper, we had a young girl who was out with her family during First Night celebrations in Delray Beach on New Year's Night. A bullet fell from the sky and broke her collar bone, exiting from her right torso. Just like the guy related a few posts back, the cops were able to trace the arc to the "bad" part of town about a mile and a half away, where several guys had been firing their guns into the air to celebrate New Year's. I was talking to the PIO of the Delray Beach PD and he told me they get at least one bad RTE (Return To Earth) from guys "shootin' their irons in the air" every year. Where he got that phrase from, I'll never know.

LOL

One more single malt scotch and I will be ready to go in the back yard and fire off a few rounds into the air. I feel sure the Plano police department will be OK with it.

I am relatively new to single malts and presently working my way through the Highlands.

My goal is to work my way through the entire country and go swimming at the coast

. It may take awhile, but I am committed to achieving my goal. We must all have a goal in life. This one is mine.

Going to a scotch tasting may be the best way to achieve it without going broke buying the whole bottle every time I want to try something new.

Be sure and wear your CC to these

gatherings. It's okay to use the bathroom in the Post Office on your way home if need be.

Nice link. This surprised me.
"People are injured, sometimes fatally, when bullets discharged into the air fall back down. The mortality rate among those struck by falling bullets is about 32%, compared with about 2% to 6% normally associated with gunshot wounds.[5] The higher mortality is related to the higher incidence of head wounds from falling bullets."
2-6%???
When I worked in an ER, I personally was involved in the treatment of 2 people hit by bullets falling out of the sky. Both victims were the product of someone shooting guns into the air on New Year's Eve, in Pasadena California. The
least injured one had a broken femur, from a .45 caliber bullet which came down through the rag-top of his jeep while he was sitting at a red light. The worst injured one is a walking miracle. The bullet hit her in the top of her left shoulder while walking down the sidewalk along the Rose Parade route, the night before the parade. The projectile was a .223, and it plunged down through her shoulder, through her left chest, tunneled vertically through her left lung, through her diaphragm, stomach, small and large intestines on the left, ricocheted to the right off the inside of her left pelvis, destroyed her bladder, ricocheted upward off the inside of her right pelvis, and came to rest in the dome of her liver.
Her injuries were catastrophic to say the least. She was in surgery for something like 14 hours, and had her blood volume replaced twice over. She lived to walk out of the hospital several weeks later.
People who blindly shoot their guns into the air deserve to be hit by their own bullets. They are random and unpredictable killers, and they are so fecklessly
STUPID that they don't even
know they are killers. They are no better than drunk drivers. They are fools.
Other than that, I have no particular opinion.

; unfortunately, with winds aloft, the earth's rotation, angle of discharge, etc., it doesn't seem to work that way.

2-6%???

i was scratching my head on that one a bit too, but after checking out the source i don't know if the data is entirely reliable. here's from the abstract:
The present study identified 118 patients treated since 1985 who were hit with spent bullets. Most (77%) were hit in the head. The mortality rate was 32%, which is significantly higher than for all gunshot wound victims in general seen at the same medical center.
i'm not willing to pay to access the article to see how they arrived at 2-6%, but it appears that the study was done at a single medical center/hospital. without knowing where that medical center is located, or what type of activity occurs in the area (gang violence, war zone, tourist attraction with wild west reenactments, etc) it's impossible to tell how reliable those numbers are.
Well, there's a fatal flaw in their statistics. (No pun intended.) The gunshot victims that are dead at the scene aren't taken to the hospital. So their 2-6% number is based upon those people who actually had a chance of surviving and were rushed to the emergency room for live saving treatment. The dead ones, therefore, are not accounted for and skew their statistics.

Note that there is not single woman at that picnic. Perhaps a commentary on which sex is more likely to be stupid.
