Always answer the door armed. I am afraid not to answer the door as we have a problem with break-in crooks knocking on doors to see if anyone is home in my neighborhood.
A few Saturday's ago I was at home about 11am. I hear a really soft tap on the door. A few seconds later I hear it again and can see a cholo guy at the door. I pick up my shotgun and open the main door, leaving the metal security door closed. When I open the door, he seems startled, but can't see me because of the security door. I tell him hello and ask what I can do for him. He stumbles a little and asks for a drink of water.
I tell him hold on. I go to the back of the house and come out through the side door and walk around front, with shotgun in hand. When he sees me come around the side, he get super nervous and tells me "huh, that is cool, never mind".
I ask him "do you want some water or not?" He responds "huh, sure". I go turn on the hose, and he picks it up and takes a drink. He tells me, "I'm not from around here. People in this town are kind of jumpy." I tell him, "really, I hadn't noticed". He thanks me a takes off down the street. I just stand there and watch him as he heads on down the road. He looks back three or four times and sees me watching him leave.
I guess he could have been a random guy who wanted a drink of water, but my guess is he was checking for empty homes. I don't think he is coming back. I remember the old story about how the stranger asking for help may be an angel in disguise, so in case he was an angel, I gave him some water, and in case he wasn't, I could have given him some 00 buck.

He might come back when your not home so he can pick up the really cool shotgun you showed him.

I actually thought about that, but through an odd set of circumstances, I had no car out. My brother borrowed my truck and my wife's car was gone. I think he was tapping on the door because there were no cars at the house. Now he will think a crazy shut-in lives there with no car...at least that is what I am hoping. (Unfortunately I will not be able to realize my dream of being a crazy shut-in until I retire).

I usually have my side arm on my all the time even when at home , so yeah even when I answer the door , I have it on me.

I answer the door after asking who it is. I stand to one side, not behind it in case someone kicks it open or shoots through it. When I do open the door, my arm is behind my back with my pistol in my hand.

If I'm up, there's a gun in my pocket at all times ... If I'm in bed and the doorbell rings, I take my nightstand 1911 with me to find out who's there ... hope nobody just flings the door open and hopes for the best, after dark I have a window I can use to see who's there before I answer ...

You have a 1911 nightstand? How do you manage to conceal that thing?

I've installed a video camera at my front door that is hooked up to my tv.

If some one knocks, I first check to see who it is.

I am armed regardless, but my feelers go up more if it is someone unknown.

For a hundred bucks or so, it is money well spent.

Not paranoid, but prepared.

I had this discussion with my neighbor a few weeks ago and he has a CHL also. He does the same as me. We look through the window whether or not we are carrying on our person and if we don't know the person we just say not interested, the door is never unlocked and we just talk a little loud through the side window. If it is the girl scouts the billfold comes out and I buy the caramel delights, yum.

My girlfriend never goes to the door when I am not home. In fact she checks the window to the side of the house so she can see out and if she sees someone she doesn't know she goes to our room where the gun is until they leave. Most of the time it is young men who are selling stuff even though they are not supposed to in our neighborhood.

Several times when we were in college and living together in our apartment we heard about a girl opening the door for someone she didn’t know and she would get raped. Ever since then we have kept the same policy on opening the door for strangers.

Unfortunately my work doesnt allow me to carry on the job , but all other times it is on my side. From the time I get home until I go to bed. When I go to bed there is an AR close by, my 12ga. and my Glock. My wife know what her role is at night and so does my oldest son.
