She's not familiar with Marsh vs Chambers, from 1983. It deals with Congress's opening prayer. SCOTUS declared it's not state sponsored, it's just an affirmation of a belief held by the majority of the country.

Id not get to bent out of shape just yet. I bet we read soon enough this a local policy, one idiot who thought he read something that requires this restriction of some such junk.
I make no secrets, I'm about the most non religious a person can get short of being a true Disbeliever. But what ever is going on,,, it's not Military policy, it might be policy, but it's more likely just a local VA admins rule.
Should be fun to watch this play out.

I watched an interview this morning with Congressman Culberson. He claimed that the director said she is carrying out the wishes of the WH.

Houston Congressman John Culberson is vowing to use his powerful position as chairman of a key House committee to “zero out” the salary of the Houston National Cemetery to force her dismissal by the Department of Veterans Affairs.

Hope she has a signed letter to that extent.

Me too, because if she does, Obama's candidacy is dead on arrival in the 2012 election cycle. A FOIA query would easily produce a copy of the document, and then it can be included in every single opposition candidate's political ads.

I don't know if there is a protocol, but I presume the family can get whomever they wish to handle the services and pray as they see fit. I don't know enough about Islam to know how funerals are handled. However, I'm sure Muslims here in the U.S. will have far greater freedom to conduct their funerals as they wish than do Christians in Muslim dominated countries where being a Christian will get you killed.

My commernt will, most likely, be skipped over, but this Southern Baptist has gotta play.
One: spoken words can't be erased. If you say 'good-by' to a loved one, in your way, play 'Taps' , or whatever matters, its a done deal.
Two: sectarian religious values can't be allowed to infringe on our Constitional framework.
Three: If you wanna mix who-shot-john religious notions into govm't, go to a place where religion IS the gov't.
Me, I ain't gonna live like that. There are domestic religious groups who think that their interpetation of religion carries more weight than our Bill Of Rights.
My Grand-Dad was a Mason. My Dad was a KKK supporter. Me, and what I try to teach to mine, is simple. Keep religion, or what passes for religion, out of politics.

Good thing, Muslims (as part of basic Islamic Knowledge) are taught how to conduct their funerals, including washing the body, wrapping the body in a shroud and correct burial. Prayers are conducted after the wash and before the burial usually in a Mosque.
Good to hear that Muslim Soldiers are allowed to conduct their funeral as per Islamic rituals.
