Not long ago.
I was asked by someone on Lake Lewisville who to call to report the gators that are being sighted more and more often in that area. I told him you can call anyone you want, but no one's going to do anything about them because they're going about their business in their natural habitat and not bothering anyone at all.

I'm told there used to be a gator farm there, and some of the critters got loose during flooding and have been breeding happily ever since. Although I spend a lot of time on the lake, I've never seen one there, but some folks have, so if you're the patient type, you might take a drive up and try your luck.

Firing SD ammo at the ground to try to kill a snake within a few feet of you is a great way to:

1) Make a lot of noise and use a lot of ammo without hitting that small moving critter
2) Produce lots of ricochets from the type of ground they often inhabit, particularly with our drought hardened soil
3) Keep you occupied long enough to thoroughly tick off the snake, convince him he's got nothing to lose, and get bitten.

If you need to dispatch the animal (a rare circumstance unless a poisonous snake is someplace where it presents a real risk someone who isn't messing with it will get bitten), a shovel or stick longer than the snake's striking range is a much safer and more effective way to go about it.

...the CCI/Speer shot loads are great in .38 or bigger caliber...the .22s are iffy...if I were in snake habitat and anticipated trouble, I would and have put the first two up in shot load...never needed one...usually they'll skedaddle...unless you stepped on 'em, in which case the smell'd kill 'em...

I normally have some .410 loaded up. I've seen a few cotton mouths out on the lake. He goes one way I go the other at a fast trot. Just like any other shooting scenario, too many factors would be involved to just say I'd shoot it.

Complex emotions often require the creative mixing of emoticons, and a loose interpretation of the individual meanings of each emoticon.

For instance, "screaming and shooting" could be " :woohoo :fire ". One might criticize the screaming emoticon as a bit unclear -- is it a happy "woohoo" or a more of a visceral cry made in the throes of terror? Let us not forget that Edvard Munch's The Scream has the same so-called flaw, but that hasn't stopped it from becoming a classic work of art.

A slightly more valid criticism of " :woohoo :fire " is that it fails to adequately convey the act of running, since the smiley is just moving back and forth without going anywhere. An obvious solution is to preface " :woohoo :fire " with " :leaving ", but that hardly conveys the urgency of the situation. At times, finding the answers we seek requires consulting a power bigger than ourselves; Google is a valuable tool in finding just the right graphic to represent your emotional state: Image :woohoo :fire

It cannot be known exactly how the public will interpret artistic work, but one thing can be certain: I've got too much time on my hands...

I carry a Shillelagh when walking. It makes a great walking stick, cane, and defensive weapon.

It's good for squirrels, grackles, you name it. And it's quiet.
