If you have a dog that will violently attack strangers you are the chances of that causing you life ruining financial and legal problems is probably significantly higher than any potential benefit the dog will provide in the off chance someone decides to rob you.

If you think you have some sort of magic dog that won't drink antifreeze or eat a steak filled with rat poison, you probably don't.

A dog is kind of like locking your car door. It might prevent a crime of opportunity, but if someone wants something that they know you have, it isn't going to do much to a determined criminal.

If there are 3 or more intruders you don't need to stop them all, just the leader. The rest will fold. There is a chance some of them won't be carrying a gun. Have you ever tried moving a flat screen tv while carrying without a holster?

...funny...but don't believe it literally...too many documented cases where EVERYONE had a gun...and shooting one didn't EVEN make them run...some of them are better prepared in their mindset/training to do the crime than some of US are to stop them...

I agree with Speedsix on this point.

Taking down the leader often causes the group to collapse in bullying situations, but I sure wouldn't bet on it in a robbery or home invasion.

Plan on continuing to address threats until all threats have departed or been neutralized.

Yet another reason that a shotgun is better than a pistol, 00 buck and plenty of it, my golden retrievers will be a good distraction as they try to lick them to death.... just aim high, would hate to hurt my dogs....

I'm not much of a shotgun person so I am curious if you have patterned 00 buck to make sure that it would not hit your dogs, it would kill me if I shot my dog, he is part of the family.

Let's just say Kalashnikov's Romanian cousin awaits any potential home invaders round here :)

Could you elaborate on some of those cases? It seems like staying to fight it out greatly increases the chance of the police showing up. Do these cases you're referring to have particular characteristics that distinguish them from the norm --in remote locations for example?

...nope...but you can get on the internet and read 'em just like I did...home invasions don't usually happen in remote places...but in the front room of your house in a neighborhood...there is no "norm" where home invasions are concerned...they're brutal, violent, done increasingly by multiple armed perps, and they don't mind a shootout...it's the news...

All very true.

In order to understand this, citizens need to realize that these folks are from a much different background. Any attempt to predict their behavior by figuring what one of our neighbors would do under the circumstances is invalid.

They don't think like the folks most of us associate with, they don't act like those folks, they aren't afraid of the police or arrest, and they're not especially afraid of dying because they know that lifespans are short in their line of work. They're not saving up for retirement.

If you plug those factors into a decision process, you get what actually happens - vicious thugs who commit horrific crimes and drive through resistance until they're physically stopped by force or find themselves so hopelessly overmatched that continuing becomes suicidal.
