I pull my weapon(s) from my holster(s) and put them in the console next to my driver's seat. I'm cognizant to keep my trigger finger away from the trigger(s).

A question comes to mind when I read this thread. I thought that a gun cannot be carried or stored when on federal property.

Is the Post Office parking lot federal property? If so, then are we allowed to secure a gun in a car that is on their
property?

Not trying to be funny I thought that a gun cannot even be in a post office parking lot.

Am I wrong?

Our Postoffice was put in a Strip center owned by HEB pantry grocery stores, the property is HEB's BUT the Post Office, bought one of the buildings , I think There was several stores, including once a dinner at one time...

Post office is on the left, HEB is stright.

Maybe the parking lot directly in front of the post office might be off limit...I'm Not really sure, but I carry in the parking lot, just park close to HEB store

You are probably ok with that but where I live the Post Office is the only property there. The parking lot and the building belong to the post office. Anyhow, when I go to the PO I do not bring a weapon.
I have no place to stow the gun unless I park on a side street.

High school Bands meet at Post office parking lot/ Post office is separate building on its own property. A CHL abiding by the law can walk the boundaries, on train tracks, in the street between HEB and post office etc, always being careful not to step onto the grass or parking lot on the Post office side of the curb.

After festivals or parades when walking back to the car, I tell my niece she can walk on the grass at the post office, but I have to walk in the street because it's a law. Once she ran across the Post office parking lot to hug another band member, I stood in the street and watched and waited for her to return, because I'm not allowed there ...

I carry my gun with the Laser, because I'm not allowed to be closer and might need to shoot from one street all the way to another street if a bad guy forced her in a car at the Post office and went out the other exit on the other street ... I'd either need to run all the way around that block, really fast, or step on Post office grass and parking lot .... which would be illegal you know, so I usually have at least 60 rounds on me that fit the laser gun ... in case I miss at that distance

I'd hate to have to step on the grass/curb/parking lot there. it could make an otherwise law abiding person "go postal" I guess.

Having kids and having to go in and out of schools on a daily basis, unholstering my weapon is pretty routine for me.

I always double check that the thumb safety is engaged on my 1911 before proceeding to unholster from my IWB, obviously keeping my finger off the trigger. The biggest thing for me is making the concious effort not to get lazy and forget to tripple check that safety everytime. Thankfully I drive a pickup so that allows a big guy like me enough room to manuever around to unholster/reholster without having to step out of the truck and draw any attention to myself.
