Why can't we get a Nationwide movement going to allow bypass of all TSA security (& delays) by simply presenting our CHL (or other similar States permits)?

After all, we are certified Good Guys with a complete FBI background check. Why can't this be used for air travel (and/or ALL SECURITY) within the USA?

Not only would it help us, it would also thin out the line for those that do not have one.
Showing your CHL at a TSA checkpoint today is just asking to be detained. I have heard one CHL'er had that happen here in DFW (and the souce was VERY reliable.)

Also the CHL does not meet the requirements for photo ID under the REAL ID Act 2008. If the chain of custody gets closed up on the CHL photograph it may meet the requirements but until then showing your CHL as photo ID is about the same as showing a library card with your picture on it. Showing the CHL you will get the stink eye from the TSA agent as they double and triple check you and your bag.

The same is true for law enforcement, including Federal law enforcement. I trust the average CHLer more than the average TSAer.

OK, so I have actually asked TSA this ame question as I travel alot. Some said yes, but only in Texas where I would suspect the folks I spoke with knew what it was. Some said no, particularly out of state.. It probably does not have the same embedded authorization marks a DL has.

When I was coming back home from a trip overseas I noticed a sign at atlanta customs for a global access pass. It's supposed to allow low risk frequent International us travelers to get through customs quickly. There is an electronic kiosk and all you have to supposedly do is swipe your card and your on your way. Alot of the requirements for the pass where very similar to what is required for a chl(at least in Texas). Maybe they could also use this pass for security as well?

:iagree: Unfortunately, I would agree with that. It would certainly help me out, as I fly fairly often for work, but I know that will never happen :grumble

I'm with you there. Heck, I would even be okay with taking an extra certification to be allowed to carry on the plane. Like that would ever happen. "rlol"

Until today, i did not know that Texas's official position was to not accept CHL as a valid form of ID. I don't fly often but i still present it first everytime, in Tx and in other states. Have not had any problems out of state. Beleive it or not, the folks in California LAX were impressed. Will be trying again today at IAH...wish me luck, although now I know its just for principle...

On the other hand, the TWIC folks will not accept it either even though there sigh lists "or any Texas photo ID..."

I'm late to the thread but... I had to fly out of DFW about a year ago (don't like to fly anymore) - did not pack a weapon. Checked in at AA counter, got the destination tag on my checked bag, and was told to take my bag down to the TSA screening station. I thought 'whaa' - but being the good little soldier I drug it down there. The guy that accepted it asked the usual questions, got to the gun question, and not only asked twice, he asked a third time if I was sure there was not a gun in the luggage. I said no - but then I put on the good 'ol boy act and jokingly asked why 'they had sent me down here for extra screening and what the concern was with me' (a 60 year old overweight, grey haired, cane using, way beyond average WB)? In a quiet voice he said "...because you were identified as a concealed handgun licensee." There is more going on in those computers than just spitting out seat assignments folks...

I think that's going to change for voting but they never accepted CHL as ID before. The proof is in the rule to display CHL plus ID to cops.

I have used my CHL twice as an ID for TSA. (Not traveling with a gun on either ocassion)

1- Long Beach where it not an issue and no one said a thing.
2- Boston Logan, where it actually sparked a friendly conversation and questions about the CHL process in Texas. I was actually surprised at the positive encounter as I would have expected for more of a hassle from Massachusetts and especially Logan airport.

This again goes with my past experiences that every time I have traveled with a firearm or used my CHL as ID, only in Texas airports have I had issues.

I have occasion to fly frequently (short hops) and once in a whikle I have grabbed the wrong card for id at the ticket counter and presented my CHL instead of my DL. Never yet had a problem or been questioned, even in other states. As far as reducing the second scan frequency, get on a rapid rewards or frequent flyer program. It seems to reduce the frequency, if not quite stop it. My flights are always short notice bookings, one way, minimal luggage. Should be tailor made for additional screening, but I haven't had any problems for some time.......
