Never thought about that. I got 2 new guns last month, .40 and .45 Must be careful

One of the reasons all my 3 guns are in the same caliber, .40 S&W.

A few years ago I was deer hunting with my 7mm mag. and shot at a nice buck about 50 yards in front of me. After I shot I noticed more smoke than usual was coming from the gun and the buck was still there looking around like "what was that?" ( It was foggy outside). I went to cycle another round and the cartridge would not eject, I tried to pry it out but it would not budge. So I got of my blind and yelled at the buck to go away! Anyway, after closer inspection I noticed the round was a 270! My dad accidentally put a couple in the 7mm ammo box. luckily there was no damage to the gun. The worst part is it would have been the biggest buck I shot to date.

I actually did this one time myself. I had a Springfield 1911 chambered in .45 and a Para-Ordnance P-16 chambered in .40 S&W. I was firing them both and loaded one round of .40 in my .45. Same result. I had to pry the expanded cartridge out. Now adays I'm mindful of what I'm doing. I also have a Kimber Pro-Carry chambered in .45 and one chambered in .38 Super that look almost identical. One weekend I was out shooting and I loaded up a .38 Super mag, inserted it to the pistol and went to aim when I saw the round hit the ground. Yup I put the .38 Super mag into the .45 released the slide and launched a whole round down the barrel instead of just a bullet! Want to know the really sad part? I did it again (racked the slide that is) and watched another one fall before I said to myself "DUH! " and took the magazine out. I have since put very different colored grips on the pistols to tell them apart.

My wife and I have agreed that we already have enough different calibers, so won't pick up any more (with the possible exception of rifles, I suppose).

I hadn't thought about having two pistols that looked similar, but that'll go away when we pass the Cheetah along to her son when he gets his CHL.

Once I did put a 9mm cartridge in a .380 magazine, but immediately realized it didn't look/feel right, so didn't get to the point of trying to slap it into the pistol.
