Lastly, as someone mentioned earlier about living in an apartment, I've seen very good reviews of the Zanotti mobile safes. They're a piece together safe that allows for easy assembly/dis-assembly while providing a higher level of protection over a standard gun cabinet. Not that its the best option, but sometimes it might make sense.

In the end any safe is better than no safe. Most home burglaries are crimes of opportunity, very few thieves will spend the time trying to get into a safe, and even fewer still will bring the proper tools to do so. However, as was mentioned, none of the safes listed here will stop a determined professional. Work with your budget for now, but don't discount an upgrade in the future.

My amsec weighs 1200 pounds...EMPTY.... I can only imagine what it weighs loaded up. That probably is not considered "safe" for an apartment...(other than on the first floor). I agree 100% with the commment you made about any safe being better than no safe. Unfortunately, we were the victims of a burgulary many years ago. They were obviously not "professionals". My bet is that they were teens or crack heads. They just grabbed anything that was not nailed down and ran off. The police said they doubted the guys were in the house more than a couple minutes. Any safe would thwart these kind of thieves. One caveate. I have heard of burglars coming back later for the stuff they could not get on the first attempt. In this case, they might come back with a crow bar or something for the safe. I have also read stories of thieves dragging safes out of the house with a chain hooked to a truck. If someone wants our stuff bad enough, I suppose they will figure out a way to steal it.

Just my opinion, but...I compared Zanotti to Dakota. Dakota really won handily comparing Apples to Apples. Just sayin.

Safes are like cars, they are many, many options, more than you would think.

Take your time, investigate, ponder, look at "features", ponder some more, then decide, you may have it for a long time.

One other hint, buy bigger than you think you need. It will fill up fast.

Gotcha. Didn't even realize there was another option in the dis-assembalable safe market. As I said I've only seen reviews on the Zanotti, but they were all pretty positive. That being the case I'd imagine Dakota to be that much better based on your experience.
