On retainer? No. But I do have a business attorney who works for a major law firm that covers several types of law. He charges me when I use his services or even call with questions. Actually... If he finds out I mentioned him on this thread, I will probably get a bill.


I will also recommend you have a good bail bondsmans number handy as well. Even in self defense, they determine a bond before releasing you, if your arrested. Believe it or not, sometimes they arrest you until they can sort everything out. I don't know about most of you folks but I have no intention of sitting in jail while the DA decides if they want to pursue a case against me.

I cannot afford to fork out a crap load of money were something to go south. Maybe I've been suckered in, but the [Pre-paid legal service] seems to be a good deal. A bunch of people each pay a little money every month and in the end, the lawyers make out like bandits, if there are no shootings. If there is a shooting, they still probably make out like bandits. In return for my meager $11 / month, I supposedly get legal assistance that even includes brandishing my firearm, should I be so stupid.

So I ask, what is wrong with this concept? a group of lawyers get what they want (money), and I think I'll get what I'm paying (great legal representation and an acquittal, or better, no charges). How can I possibly go wrong. If they fail to represent me in a professional manner, I spend what little money I do have getting the word out to every CHL holder in the state of Texas about these guys.

But it's the concept that is appealing to me. Hypothetically speaking, 20,000 Texans with CHL's pay $120/yr. for the services of [Pre-paid legal service], thats 2.4 millon. It's not that we, individually, are going to pay $120 for great service. We, collectively, are paying millions for the unfortunate few to have great representation.

I would appreciate an intelligent response to these questions please. I do not have all the answers, but i would like to hear alternatives for someone who isn't independently wealthy or who doesn't have family or friends who are lawyers (thank God). I am not a salesperson for [Pre-paid legal service] or any other Law Firm. I am, however, very interested in maintaining my personal liberties and freedom, even if it costs me $10.95/mo., that's all.

Well, I can't see that many people paying for the service, and aren't there multiple companies/agencies/firms doing this? I doubt they are making that much.

I'm believing the attorneys doing this service aren't in it "for the money" . If they are, I bet they are really disappointed...LOL. Especially if that fee includes bail service as well. 10% is the usual fee for a bail bondsman to post bail. In my case, that ten percent was 15,000.00. The attorney fees were only 2500.00.

Thank god I have two attorneys in my family, my mother(retired) and my son... A recent disillusioned law school graduate with a license from the state to practice law and a job market that is not real lucrative for a recent graduate. Neither would have been able to help my situation as I needed a criminal attorney and Mom was a family attorney and my son was just a kid at the time. I only mentioned this little fact to explain my reaction to the comments about attorneys only being in it for the money and the negative remarks thanking god nobody in his family were attorneys as if being an attorney is somehow less than a admirable profession.
