I don't think differing opinions are a problem. I do think belittling and berating comments are. Obviously most of the people posting on this thread are like minded. You obviously are not. I agree. It works both ways. Not always around here. Something is seriously wrong if the guy who says he thinks believing you need a survival kit for the end of civilization is cute becomes a threat. I will leave it at this point.

For me the "bug out bag" was less about the end of the world, or surviving the streets its more just the one bag I can grab if we need to leave the house in a hurry (fire, tornado, flood, whatever), and it will have some food and water, and copies of all our important documents (DLs, Passports, birth certs, SS cards). Since we are all the type of people who like to be armed wherever we are legally permitted than Ammo and possibly a gun are part of the bag as well. The initial purpose of the post was to just find out what people are stocking up on.
03Lightning your post was kind of rude.

I don't think it's the disagreement that is the issue. People are always free to do that, and there should always be a freedom to give and take. The issue rather is the dismissive tone regarding something that another person takes seriously. It's unnecessary. Imagine the following two brief conversations:

First...
Person A: "I've put together a bugout bag."
Person B: "Hmm... I don't really see the need for it myself. Here's why...."

Next...
Person A: "I've put together a bugout bag."
Person B: "OMG, you're just too cute!"

Person B disagrees with Person A's premise in both conversations, but in the first one he disagrees respectfully, while in the second one he makes fun of Person A and is disrespectfully dismissive.

The treatment we give others is the treatment we invite on ourselves.

As I previously stated, preparedness is not my sole obsession. I'm trying to run a business. I have a MORE than busy faith life. I mentor young people, etc., etc., etc. All of these things are also passions of mine. Preparedness is only one small part of the puzzle that is TAM. And having lived in California, the idea of preparedness is perfectly natural. We always had a "Earthquake Kit" in our home. We raised our son to think this way. In California, big earthquakes are as real of a possibility as tornados are in Texas.....maybe even more of a possibility since a large earthquake will devastate a large region and even change the topography. It makes perfect sense to have a cache of temporary necessities against the possibility that a natural disaster has demolished your home: food, water, prescriptions if you're on regular meds, first aid, simple shelter, etc., etc. I lived for years with a small, but very real threat that this could happen. When the Northridge earthquake happened, one of my friends was living on the 2nd floor of an apartment building which news channels kept showing on the air because it pancaked.........with her inside of it. When she was rudely awakened by the quake, her formerly 2nd floor apartment was at ground level, she jumped out her window and ran off, not knowing where to go or what to do, and everything she owned was completely demolished.

This stuff is not fantasy. It's real. I'm sure my friend in Northridge never imagined that her experience could ever happen to her. I'm not saying that you have to live in daily fear of the small chance that something like this could happen to you, but Aesop's Fables exist for a reason, and the tale of the ant and the grasshopper is as timeless as the human race. If you do not put together a disaster relief plan for your own family, you could reasonably be called foolish according to a timeless standard of wisdom. Call it a Tornado Kit or a bugout bag.....whatever floats your boat. If you're not nailing down this detail on behalf of your loved ones, then they deserve better.

And then once it is handled, you don't obsess, because you've handled it!

You can choose to play the role of the grasshopper if you want..........and you might even get away with it for your entire life. But have enough sense to not make fun of the ant, because he might not be feeling particularly charitable if the "flag goes up," as Jeff Cooper was fond of calling it.

The original subject line was not "Rational preparations for credible risks," it is "Bulk Ammo for 'the end of the world.'"

I think the OP was being ironic with the quotation marks.

I already said my piece about needing hundreds of rounds of ammunition versus medications, food, water, flashlights, and means of communications. I've been through several hurricanes and tropical storms where I didn't need to shoot one single person. I needed most of the other stuff.

If the actual end of the world arrives, I guess we won't have to worry about any of this, will we? 'Cuz it will be over.

I have to get to work. My response was to the end of the world topic. Quite frankly, this forum is and was about protecting our gun rights. Doomsday survivalist forums abound if one wants to talk preparing for the end. When lurkers who are on the fence about gun rights, read a bunch of guys talking as if they really think "the end is nigh", it can confirm the suspicion that we are a bunch of paranoid gun nuts. This is MY opinion and Yes... I find it cute. Maybe I should have said... not to be taken seriously. I wanted to make sure the fence sitters did not think we were all planning for the end of the world... as the original thread topic suggested.

Granted... being prepared for a tornado, earthquake, flood or other natural disater in an area prone to these, is not at question on a thread with the words... END OF THE WORLD ... in the title.

03Lightningrocks, just wanted to give you a different viewpoint, no big deal though, maybe just something to chew on? I personally found this forum because I have so many questions about CHL, ammo, etc etc etc. I am already in a situation where I don't have any likeminded or well versed people to turn to about this sort of subject. It took a lot of "courage" to go out and get my license, but that (in my opinion) is the easier step in CHL. I have so many things to learn about holsters, law, and everything gun related. This is the one place that I have been able to turn to that has provided me with knowledge, support, and at times a fresh perspective that I get anywhere else. It is already intimidating enough to get on a forum and post something or ask a question that will undoubtably sound stupid to many people. Some of the opinions you expressed can be more discouraging to a person like myself than you might realize. Wouldn't you rather have someone such as myself out i public(where you might be walking around), with very little experience, being a little more confident and educated because there was a place to safely turn to to ask my "stupid" questions? Maybe not, and if that's the case, please disregard my post and carry on. Maybe you were just having a bad day and needed somewhere to turn to (with likeminded individuals) to get spend some time and came across as incredibly demeaning. End of the world, BOB, proper ammo etc, would seem to me an appropriate discussion when related to a CHL forum? :confused5

If I can say this as politely as possible, I don't think adults can have a reasonable discussion of anything without offending someone. I've seen people turn discussions of disposable diapers into WW III.

When Al Gore invented the internets, he didn't make it illegal to be offensive. If he had, we could not build enough jails.

Been there! One of our friends is a militant cloth diaper fanatic. You would think disposable diapers were directly responsible for every rash, disease, and global warming. Hey if you've got time to stay at home washing diapers thats fine, but both my wife and I have to work...

Anyways, the whole reason I put "the end of the world" in quotes is because it means something different to different people and I was being sarcastic. Just wanted to know what people were stocking up on if they were stocking up. Specifically ammo they would carry with them if they had to relocate to somewhere else. More specifically if regular round nose fmj ammo was an acceptable round to carry with me. I got my answers.

Very good post. I don't feel it distracts from the point I was making at all. It does make me wonder if I am not making my point very well. I don't consider it "stupid" to ask a question about any of the topics you mentioned. I don't consider a person who is preparing for the end of the world "stupid".

I consider the topic that the world is about to melt down or that society is on the verge of collapse to be somewhat extreme. I don't believe the end is nigh.

Many pro gun folks don't build "end of world" bug out kits and many believe, as I do, that there is not much point in prepping for the "zombie apocolypse".

There is room for both types and beliefs. While I say it is "cute" to build an end of world "bug out bag", I am sure others feel I am "cute" for believing society is not on the verge of total collapse.

Think about something that just happened here, and it shows a possible mentality drift in a forum. I attacked nobody!!! I question the "bug out bag" concept and remark that I think the threads on them are "cute". I even made a couple simple comments on why I think an "end of world" bug out bag was cute. Meanwhile, I get attacked on a personal level under the guise of somehow trying to make a point. I know for a fact this only happens when someone is feeling threatened and has the desire to lash out in an insulting manner.

If this had been a Glock thread and I insulted Glocks, would folks get all touchy feely and start attacking me on a personal level as if they had personally been insulted on their choice of weapon? If they did, the mods would tell them to quit insulting me on a personal level.

Anyway... I appreciate your thoughts and appreciate even more that you did not resort to insults or insinuations to make your point. This is a great forum, for the most part, but occasionally threads get out of wack.

The only time I evacuated was the Rita fiasco. I took my .357 Magnum revolver. I didn't have to shoot anyone then, either.

Far more people died in medical emergencies, traffic collisions, and that horrible bus fire. Plus several billion dollars in lost productivity. My entire company was shut down for a week.

Glad you got your answers.
