I also have my I-phone set to notifying me of each and every charge against my Debit card.
That's what I do, until I did get fraudulent charges... at another gas station. If you use your pin and they get it, they can use your card anywhere. If you use your zip code and they get it, they can use it at other gas stations which just require the zip code.
Your method isn't 100% safe, but it can limit the damage done by the criminal.
Yes, that is the whole point. You do whatever you can to limit the probability of being victimized.
My 'method' is one of the many steps that I take to limit the damages done.

The same safeties exist for using the credit feature of the debit card as the credit card (VISA,MC logo debit cards). True, your money is "at risk", but no more than the credit card. I have had my debit card stolen twice and funds used twice. In both instances, San Antonio Federal Credit Union has returned every cent, same day, and was available to use same day. Had to get a new card, but c'est la vie.
I don't use credit and don't borrow money. I am a Dave Ramsey Kool-Aid drinking, cash only guy. I have an account I use for shopping only and never have to worry about late fees, term changes, annual fees, etc.
Just my 2cents.
I drink the same Kool-Aid brother! Thanks to Dave Ramsey's ideas we are completely debt free (aside from the house). I hope I will never have to have a credit card in my life again.
To each their own, but Your not saving yourself anything by not having a credit card. I am also debt free, paid cash for both my car and motorcycle. I have a Chase sapphire cred card that I do all of my daily spending on and pay off at the end of each month the way we operate is no different there is no money spent that I don't have. the only difference is I get at least 3 % back on all of my spending. and have a direct number to call for customer service with a real person who answers the phone when I call no matter what time it is (a real person located in the US)
although as you already said Discipline is key

Bingo! That's what it all boils down to.
I bank with USAA and they don't have any type of rewards program.

Sure they do. I have one on my Mastercard with USAA.
Some years ago, our company was building some houses near here. The equipment rental turned down our credit app, as we had never used credit. We had several millions in the bank at the time to cover construction, but nothing would convince the rental outfit, so I charged all the rentals, and materials from another supplier, on my USAA Mastercard, which had at the time a $30,000 limit. We paid it twice a month. When construction was complete, I redeemed the points for two first class round trips tickets to Paris! The gal taking the redemption said, "I've never heard of anyone with that many points!"
The funny part is that taking a credit card costs the merchant 2-3%. I also found out the rental company was in bankruptcy, so I felt a bit like we'd been called ugly by a frog.

I have used them before for several low-traffic sites, for both hosting and as a domain registrar. I have found them to always be reputable, responsive, and have reasonable (but not perfect) uptime. While not on-topic with banks, I'd recommend them for a host when only a portion of a shared server and limited bandwidth is needed.

Ditto, used them for the same things had very few issues.
