Re: Bought a Rem 870 clone

Post by RoyGBiv »

I picked up one of the Hawk's at Academy the other day.
I liked the construction, weight, size, fit... Planning to add night sight inserts and a mag extension.
Looking forward to taking the family out to shoot it and see how well they can manage it with low recoil loads (if I can find some :roll: )

One thing I noticed upon closer inspection, is the post-parkerizing welds on the action bar where it connects to the fore end and a rusty-looking grinded-down screw(?) that looks like it holds the mag tube into the receiver.

Any comments?
Should I think about keeping a coating on these places other than some light grease or oil?
Doesn't seem like something that would require a return to vendor.

In the course of researching these things, I got seduced today at Academy into buying a clone of the Remington 870, the IAC Hawk 982:

It's made in China (yuck!) by Norinco (yay!) - and holds the same as the Stevens, 5+1. The length-of-pull (trigger to buttpad) is slightly shorter at 13.5" compared to the Stevens at 14.5". While I preferred the winged front-sight of the Stevens, I finally decided on the Hawk for 2 reasons:

1. Ejection-port. The Stevens is a clone of the Ithaca 37, which ejects its shells downwards, not out the side. Great for lefties - but prevents me from using a favorite technique, port-loading, where I can swap out a load by slapping say, a slug, into the ejection-port.

2. Spares. Being an 870 clone, just about all 870 parts and accessories will fit the Hawk (the one exception is the barrel), so I can easily tart this thing up.

Got some Remington 0-buck (12 pellet) and Winchester PDX slugs to test - range report coming soon.
I got a Stevens model and when I got home I discovered I could not cycle the action. It took me awhile to realize that the magazine tube had drifted slightly back into the receiver. I got it back in position by overtightening the barrel nut.

I'll have to keep an eye out for that on mine. Had you fired it at all before making that discovery? I've had no problem cycling mine, once I learned how the slide release on the trigger guard works. I still haven't had the chance to shoot mine yet. Maybe this weekend.....

No, it came that way out of the box. It looked ok at first glance after being assembled. The one thing that seemed strange to me was that there wasn't as much thread to screw on the magazine tube cap/barrel nut, as I expected. In retrospect that should have been a dead giveaway but I messed with it for almost an hour before I recognized the problem.

I've got a steel gong target (about 8" diameter) set up out back of the house and had no trouble hitting hit with slugs from about 70 yards.

AndyC wrote:I saw the same on mine in the store - it looked almost like brazing to me (shows you how much I know about welding), to which parkerizing won't stick. Doesn't bother me at all; you could even hit it up with Rustoleum to cover it up, if you wanted ;)
Actually it looks "soldered", not welded... I should have been clearer.
Brazing is similar to soldering but uses capillary action to fill tight spaces (pipe joints, etc).
Clearly this is "material added" (soldering) not "material mixed/joined" (welding)

And as you correctly point out Andy, and I did not consider before asking, the parkerizing will not adhere to the solder.
Must be Friday or something.

Rustoleum it will be..

Thanks.! And thanks for the tip on this shotty... Just what I was looking for at a good price. :thumbs2:

Ive been checking and cant find one of the IAC hawks at academy, but saw grabagun has them on "Sale" for 208.
Really thinking of picking one up, I dont have a shotgun currently and think it would be a good idea to finally get one.

I received an email today from CDNN advertising their Hawks for $189.99 with the ghost ring rear/rifle front sights, or $169.99 with a receiver rail and front bead. The ad said they're in stock.

Hmmm.. Sounds like it might be easier to drill/tap a hole and screw on a bracket or (more likely) use a simple barrel/mag bolt on bracket.

Thanks again for the feedback.

FYI regarding a mag extension for the Hawk.
Long thread with photos here: http://www.calguns.net/calgunforum/show ... 703&page=3" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Product page: http://www.riflestock.com/store/do/product/MXT/01-04-01" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Disclaimer: I've not tried it. Read the CalGuns Thread for hands on details.

YouTube! You know you want to! :clapping:
I might, but if I do it will be awhile. We're in the process of moving from our city home to our country home, and I haven't had much time lately for shooting.
